Hey GRE ( Radio Shack ) if you are working or planning on introducing a new Digital model in the near future I wish you would make some announcement soon. With our Dollar up here in Canada on the rise I am getttng the bug to spend on something new. If you don't pipe up soon I might just go with the UNIDEN BC 396.

I have a 2096/96 and pro 97 already. Just wanted to know if they have been secretly working away at a new and improved Digital model. :) I am kind of partial t the GRE products as you can see.

I purchased all my scanners from Scanners Unlimited. I will continue to purchase from Glen when I am ready to buy another.

With the potential problems with rebanding, a petition has now been filed with the FCC for an additional 30 MHz of spectrum in 700 MHz, which would be outside the portion that the 396 covers, I would not buy any scanner right now. When these things are resolved then GRE and Uniden will likely come out with new scanners.

Patience may be your best friend.

Well there is no doubt that the 396t is a pretty damn nice scanner. With the firmware updates that have been made the 396t is a solid unit. But, GRE makes some nice stuff too and I think that they are working on there 2nd generation of Digital scanners. With that said I would like RS to break their corperate policy of silence to give the people that don't have $525.00 to spend on a scanner every six months the opportunity to wait until their product comes out. With rebanding neither company knows for sure if they will be able to accomodate rebanding and I think RS has taken the stance not to bring out any new models until they know for sure that they will be able to accomodate rebanding. Right now everybody is just waiting for a few rebanded systems to go up and be tested.

I think you may be right there my friend. Although I am not to concerned about rebanding up here in Canada in my city right now. The Border is about 75 miles away from me

Hmmm, maybe I should go look at one of those nice big screen LCD T.V's then.

This is the first time I heard about this. This extra 30mhz of spectrum may be available through a firmware update. UPMan?

As mentioned _many_ times, a firmware update should take care of the latest Uniden scanners. GRE has a different story since they don't do downloadable firmware updates, so I'd hold off on the Pro96 and go with the 396T with no worries if you need one now.

Really? No downloads? So what's this all about then?

That's a DSP upgrade.

DSP and Microprocessor firmware are two different things.

As mancow noted - that fixed some bugs in the APCO25 decoding section, it had no impact on the actual radio firmware and would not be able to tweak for rebanding. If there is a fix, it will come with you sending the Pro96/2096 back to RS for a new chip.

I have to admit this is where uniden beats GRE hands down. I like GRE scanners but uniden gets my money now because I don't have to send my radio in.
