The loop works with a provided 12 volt AC-DC adapter. Everything you need comes right with the package. I find it works quite well around the house. Probably a reasonable choice if you have the AR-DV1. The tuning apparatus not only matches the antenna to different frequencies, but acts as a pretty good preselector for the AR-DV1. I find the loop reasonably good from the AM radio band up to UHF.

Steve, Thanks very much, it sounds like the AOR LA400 is a good choice!

Hello,

I did not get much of a chance to look at the new firmware, v1507I, but I did notice display of CTCSS/DCS for code search is fixed. The decoded DCS code is still wrong.

Eric,
I started a new thread 'AR-DV1 Firmware v1507i' you might want to see. I don't want to duplicate.

It probably was me, asking all those dumb questions! The guys just needed a rest....

Most assuredly not! You asked some good questions. I have no dog in this fight anymore; the demo I had went back to Jeff at the Hamstation when I declined to purchase. I hope it works out for the owners of the receiver, great potential there combined with great flaws.

Good luck!

Still waiting on AOR to get its firmware act together so Gommert at Butel can get the first version of the software out. In the meantime, I went to the AOR website to check to see if any news. Now they have a big ad that the AR-DV1 is a software defined digital radio. Am I missing something? Where is the "software defined." Can someone tell me what qualifies in this radio as being an SDR.
I am going to give Taka a call on Monday and find out what is going on. In the meantime, does anyone else have this radio who would like to comment. I really have not used it in the last couple of weeks. I am waiting for some program software. Could I program it by hand? Yes, sure, I programmed about 25 channels. But I'm done programming large number of channels with alpha tags by hand. Done that in past years but I have been spoiled by moderns scanners and available software.
So here is hoping AOR gets whatever Gommert needs to get out a beta version of ARC for the AR-DV1. I thought I saw that Rick N9JIG was going to be trying this out soon. But have seen no posts from him on this radio. Anyway, let's see what happens this month.

If the AR-DV1 digitizes the RF at some point and uses DSP to perform demodulation and other functions and that those DSP functions can be changed or upgraded, then it would be an SDR radio. Computer remote control of a radio has nothing to do with SDR.

That makes sense. Never thought about that aspect. Thanks for information.

AOR emailed me an updated pdf version of the manual and the front cover now calls it a SDR. I've not drilled down into differences between the old and new manual. Last I checked (been a few days), AOR website has manual dated 5/5, while the new one is dated 7/8.

It appears the new manual ( SDR DIGITAL VOICE RECEIVER) starts on page 65 and continues to page 96. All pertaining to COMMAND LIST AND DETAILS.

Hello,

The updated manual is available.
http://www.aorusa.com/support/manuals/AR-DV1_manual_with_command_list.pdf

Two interesting things to try are the Stereo Decode and the Frequency Scope. The Stereo Decode is not listed as being in the menus, but I can try it through the serial commands. The Frequency Scope commands are similar to the AR-ALPHA.

I was playing with the Frequency Scope commands on the AR-Alpha and discovered some of the commands are undocumented in the AR-Alpha command list. The Frequency Scope data is also displayed on the AR-Alpha's LCD screen. I am pretty sure I tried the commands on the AR-DV1 and they worked. So it is possible to at least get a Bandscope Display on a computer, much like the Uniden 536/436 scanners.

I am busy developing an EXTIO dll for my AOR AR-Alpha so I have only used the AR-DV1 for some routine listening rather than exploring the features. It appears I could make a "Bandscope App" for both the AR-Alpha and AR-DV1.

Hello,

I tried the Stereo Decode and Frequency Scope commands and they are not implemented yet. I get 60 responses to the commands, and the 60 response is not documented in the manual.

So some commands are for future features.

Hello,

I just realized that the version number is YYMM followed by a letter. I thought there was something familiar about it. :)

A new firmware release that fixes the IF Filters and other problems, plus adds some features. I will give it a try tonight.

Hello,

I did a quick check and the IF filters are fixed. I was able to get weak weather stations on 162.450 and 162.500 without interference from the strong 162.475. There is a 7.5KHz step. The DCS Search now displays the correct DCS code.
