AOR DV10 opinion.

Im considering getting a DV10, I listen mostly to Ham radio, railroad, boats, and airplanes, havent been too impressed with the Uniden SDS100, am just concerned about spending that kind of money on something and not getting my money worth on it, any suggestions? Thanks

"Getting my money worth on it" is very subjective.

Why, in particular, do you want a DV10?

If you really must have all those digital modes then the DV10 is the only game in town.

It's P25 decoding is awful, amongst other issues.

You'd be better off buying a secondhand IC-R30, no DMR, but a far superior radio and several hundred dollars cheaper than the DV10 when it was in production.

Hmmmm, I just got my AR-DV10 a few days ago and here is my view of it.
The Radio is built really solid,
Feels good in the hand!
But it seems to be missing some things that should be in a radio today.
There's no way to adjust the time delay when scanning a bunch of channels.
The backlight adjustment is a joke, its either set to Off, Always On or Auto with a 5 second timeout.
If you want to set a pass on a channel you have to go down into the menus to set it on, and if you want to remove
the Pass , its a major PITA to do it.
The radio has a good sound when receiving UHF and VHF signals, very nice tone.
Working though the menus is pretty easy once you read the manual and getting to a particular channel saved in the memory is easy.
Setting up searches is pretty easy too!
Doing things in the VFO's is easy and saving a freq into the memory is easy too!
Now for the one thing that might make me send it back..... There is a clicking noise that comes and goes when scanning a memory bank.
It seems to have something to do with the SQL setting, if the SQL is set too high it seems like its trying to open the SQL but is failing.
If the SQL is set too low its opening too easy and making noise.
If anybody has any ideas on how to adjust the radio to fix this problem let me know.
I did play around with settings with FM or Auto to detect the different Mode and also with DCS and CTCSS settings.
I do like the radio but that clicking noise is driving me nuts!

You don't need a 'hip full' of radios' to cover the modes you desire. The SDS100 you have will do DMR, NXDN and P25 - if you have issues with these modes, then post in the Uniden forums and see if someone there can help. I think C4FM is a Yaesu or Kenwood mode, so you'd need a C4FM radio for that.

As for increasing 'range', a good antenna high up in the air with the right coax is the way to go. Yes the radio's sensitivity and strong signal handling play a role, but don't separate one from the other. The 2 go together, and keep in mind that 'range' is also dependent on frequency as well as any interfering obstructions. As a very general rule, as the frequency goes up, the shorter the signal will travel, obstructions aside.

The "clicking" issue drives me crazy too. Increase the squelch setting amd it goes away but then weak signals no longer open the squelch.

Well its been a few days, the clicking noise still comes and goes.

Is there a defect with the radio that's making the clicking noise or is it just a crappie design of a radio?
Any owners of the DV10 have a opinion?
I still have time to return the radio I don't want to keep it it if its a bad design

My unit does the same, so I'm going with the latter..

My DV-10 doesn't have the click noise. Yes, poor P25 decoding. Programming software isn't the best. Stock antenna is for vhf airband. battery life is mediocre. Icom R30 is a better radio assuming you don't need DMR.

It seems the mode selection more benefits Euro folks. It does well on DMR. Construction is solid, Yaesu did well in this area.

All in all, it is not a $1000 radio. They are showing up on the used market in the $600/650 range which is still a lot of money for something that needs more work to improve it but AOR, like Xiegu will likely leave much to be desired in firmware.
