Hi,
I'm about to put up an AOR SA7000 antenna (max 1.8 metres tall) on top of a 2 metre pole on the outside of a single story house, running the coax inside to the scanner room. Do I need to earth/ground the setup in case of lightning? Any advice on how would be appreciated. We do live in a summer-storm prone area of Australia.

G'day!

I would be inclined to put a nice copper clad earth rod into the ground at the base of the pole and bond it to the antenna pole with a good solid piece of cable. It is always better to use caution and ground an antenna installation.
The co-ax should have a lightning arrestor installed prior to it entering the house.

Above all, disconnect the antenna during any storms.

Regards, Commscanaus.

Dont expect any difference in signal from grounding an antenna, I live in an area where lightning is very very rare. I just unplug the antennas when possible storms arise. If you have the time and supplies, always better safe than sorry.
