Packet APRS VoiceAlert, anyone still using it?

Over the last few years my wife and I have taken several road trips and I have had APRS VoiceAlert running on my radio looking for some simplex QSOs. Occasionally I will hear a 100 Hz PL packet pop through my radio and when I pick up my mike to attempt to call that station more than once I get no responses back. Either the originators of these transmitted signals have their receiver’s volume turned all the way down or they are transmitting APRS packets with the 100 Hz PL tone without understanding the VoiceAlert concept. I have only been able to initiate a few simplex QSOs this way. I guess the APRS VoiceAlert concept has really died off which is too bad because it is really a clever idea. Any thoughts?

It's been a while (approximately 6 years) since I ran APRS in my vehicle. Before that, I'd run Voice Alert on a regular basis. I can count on the knuckles of one finger on one hand the number of times I got a ping on Voice Alert.

I run it, but alot of times my second band is on a repeater and not on simplex. Not by choise but more of forgettin to change the channel.

Take a look at the voice alert ping for distance and direction to that station. I'm betting distance will indicate the packet was repeated and beyond simplex range.

I never heard anyone on VoiceAlert. Around here, the only APRS data are all digipeaters and weather stations, along with a couple of mobile stations. APRS and 2m just don't have activity in these parts.
