"A whack load..."

That sounds like a lot.

Without seeing pictures or a description, we have no way of knowing. I mostly see TV antennas on apartment buildings.

Sounds like a cellular panel antenna like the ones on towers around here.

Why on apt buildings? Do the apt buildings own them/put them up.. or does a cell company ask if they can build them there?

Apartment buildings are tall. Buying land and building towers is very expensive they likely lease the use to the roof from the building owner.

In the industry anything taller than you are is "vertical real estate" and loaded with antennas of every shape, size and description. If you have to bend down to see the roof likely they're cell panels that pop up everywhere to fill in holes and give adequate coverage. It's called "site leasing" whereas the owner of the antenna(s) and equipment rents space from the landlord. I know a couple of hams that lease tower space to commercial outfits and the majority of ham repeaters are at leased sites.

An interesting thing to note is cell sites and the coverage of each cell varies widely. In rural areas you'll see very tall towers miles apart so each cell covers a wide area while in urban areas and inner cities in particular you'll see antennas everywhere so each cell may cover only a few blocks, sometimes even less. Since they hand you off seamlessly you never know when you move between them, it appears as continuous coverage to the end user. Why so many in urban areas? Penetration much the same as with those systems you monitor, they want coverage deep inside buildings which is why PS systems in these areas also have so many "tower" sites.

Cellular antennas; normal practice in urban areas is to have a cell site with antennas arranged in 3 directions each sector covering 120 degrees. Two primary issues are coverage and capacity, by using lower antenna height and more cells you gain capacity and better coverage. In rural areas because less capacity is needed the cell sites are usually much higher on towers to provide larger geographic coverage; some sites may use omni antennas. Cellular system design is a specialized field as the network is constantly evolving as radio traffic increases or vehicular traffic (new roads) are built.

all i have to say is THAT IS RF HELL DOWN THERE!!!!

That one photo has two small tv antennas facing different directions on a little alliance tv rotor on a big tower. i wonder why? how could it rotate without hitting the tower and why would they need a rotor on a tower with two antennas facing different directions anyways? weird. i can't believe the radio transmitters and antennas can work worth a hoot with all of them going off all the time. all that metal in close proximity.

I don't think thats a rotator but looks to be some sort of coupler or a TTA (tower top amplifier).

In my area on a lot of tall buildings were commercial ant. (UHF) and others. I used to work for a group that had a GMRS Repeater located on top of the Fisher Building (Detroit, MI) and I was one of the lucky ones that got to go up on the roof now and then to work on the repeater and antennas. I also got to see who also had other equipment up there.

Once, found an antenna and repeater for the Secret Service located there. A few others that were unlabled, but the owners of the building made lots of money from leasing that real estate.

Most cellular site leases are for a 5 year duration with annual payments to the property owners. Not a bad business to be i a landlord with a cellular carrier as a tenant!
