• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hey all,

I recently upgraded my XTS 1500 for a VHF APX 6000 for use at work in rural EMS. I know a lot of people in my area use the APX 4000 and I don’t really know the major differences between the two..? To my knowledge the APX 6000 was discontinued but the 4000 is still being made, is one better than the other?

Thanks

By all purposes the 6000 is better than the 4000 but if the 6000 is sitting in a holster the entire time not subject to 'use' it may not be as appreciable whereas the 4000s cost becomes

To be completely honest, I got the 6000 because it was a much better deal price wise where I purchased it. What are some of the advantages of the 6000 over the 4000?

They are quite different from one another, most notably the physical layout. The 6000, 7000, and 8000 series are robustly built true public safety grade radios; the 900, 1000, 4000...not as much. The 6000 has a top display in addition to the optional full display, whereas the 4000 only has the front display under the speaker. The audio output is markedly better with a 6000 vs a 4000, even moreso if the 6000BN has QA09006 Adaptive Noise Suppression in the flashcode, the audio rivals the 8000.

There are many other difference, too numerous to list, however the info is out there and easily found via spec sheets and APX subscriber catalogs on MSI's site, all of which can be found with a simple Google search.

Bottom line is that your 6000BN is superior to any 4000 model, so it would be a clear downgrade for you. Oh and the 6000AN was produced from 2011-2016, and was replaced by the 6000BN in 2016 and is very much still in production and supported.
