To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

APX 6500 Remote Head Rear Speaker Issue

I have a Motorola APX 6500 installed in my truck. I have been using the speaker connection on the head through the "red" connector for some time now with no issues. I recently decided to move my speaker to the rear accessory of the brain to make it out of sight. I have used multiple trapezoid accessory connectors that contain the speaker connection on the brain on the radio and it will not function properly. I can hear alert tones, out-of-range tones, TPT when transmitting, and even hear audio when I use the playback feature, but when the radio is on an active channel, none of the audio from the units talking comes through the speaker on the rear. I have reconnected a speaker to the remote head and everything functions as normal. I have worked with many radios in fire apparatus and have wired speakers both ways (to the brain and head) with no issues. Am I missing something in the program that makes it not work? Thanks in advance.

We don't currently have any remote mount APX 6500s in service, but do have many 8500s and none of them route any audio to the 26 pin rear connector in that configuration. The audio path is separate. Our installers were trying to interface Firecom headsets that way and they simply wouldn't work because the radio still "acts" like a head is installed to the front of the brick but its volume control is always at zero.

Are your alert tones set for a minimum volume greater than zero? That might explain why you hear them (I think ours are set to follow volume). On radios you say work, are they AN or BN models? That might also have a bearing on the issue, but I'm not sure on that.

That would make sense. This particular radio is an AN model but most of the radios that we work with installing are BN models. My alert tones are set to follow volume but have a minimum volume level to receive calls, two-tone, and get call alert pages. I rewired it to the control head speaker port and everything is function normally now.
