• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I conclude that the statement about Motorola attacking previously hacked radios is without merit until such time as further information becomes available.

Word on the street is v18 does exactly that:

A cut-out from APX firmware version 18 readme, says

Abstract: Hosted Depot Updates
System Platforms Affected: All
Special Configurations: N/A
Description: This is a strategic initiative to address the security and robustness limitation found with the usage of older depot tools. Blocks the older stand alone depot tool from updating new firmware and Flashport.
The older firmware will still have the issue, and cannot be changed, so the fix will only apply to new firmware versions in this release and beyond.
The old depot tool key was being copied and replicated.

It doesn't "attack" any radio. Once you install FW 18 you will no longer be able to use standalone depot on that radio (until someone hacks the depot client :p).

Technically the boot loader was modified back on R17.00.01 HOST to accommodate audio instant recall. Writing to the bootloader with depot result in a bricked radio but not for the "enhancement" added to HOST 18 to thwart FUTURE unauthorized upgrades.

Upgrading to HOST18 won't remove features added by "aftermarket" means to exiting radios, but attempts to write to the radio after upgrading WILL result in a bricked radio that will have to go the depot under (presumably) flat rate or time and materials, provided they'll actually accept it. Ebay parts radios? Good luck with that.

So lets just say that you have an APX 8000 radio with all of the features built into the radio and the codeplug. You are not looking to keep Depot the radio and you have a valid CPS codeplug.

I guess upgrading to the latest 18 firmware is okay. I have 16.12 and just have not had the burning desire to upgrade the firmware. Everything seems fine at 16.12 with no issues.

Can anyone tell me what I need to do to update the firmware on a Motorola APX7000XE? I am not finding instructions on how to go about doing this...

Download the firmware from MOL. Unzip the BBF. Open your CPS, click "refresh radio". The CPS will do the rest. Follow the instructions on the screen. Ribbon>Device>Flashport>Radio Software Refresh.
