• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hey everyone! I have been using the APX CPS for a while now with the APX 8000. I think I have a pretty good understanding of the functionality. One thing I am trying to better understand is the encryption settings.

The APX8000 came with AES-256 & AES-GCM and of course, ADP.

Here is my biggest question:

Do I use Hardware or Software for secure operation, in Secure Wide, to utilize AES? I am getting conflicting answers from multiple outlets. Also, can someone give me a straight forward explanation between the two? I’ve read what’s in the manual about a dozen times and it’s still a bit confusing.

Next, how do I know that I am actually using AES in my configuration? There is no drop down option for AES and nothing to verify that it’s actually activated or engaged in a channel setting / personality.

For AES256? That requires hardware and a HW keyloader. And the display has a separate icon for AES256 vs other algos.

So even though AES-256 and AES-GCM show up in the radio (see attached) I still need to do something else?

Yes you need a Key Variable Loader (KVL) device, whether OEM or something like a KFDTool

Ah, ok…so my radio is just saying it’s capable of using AES keys. I need a KVL to create the keys and use them.

If you have QA06653 SW-AES in your flashcode, you can just keyload with the KFDtool from github using DLI mode via the standard progamming cable. Make sure your CKR is put into the keylist under Secure Wide in CPS first before attempting to load.

Thanks for the responses! I don’t have the SW-AES in the flashcode. I found a KVL 3000+ that will do the AES keys I need. Thanks for the help everyone!
