To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

APX APX 8000 WiFi not Enabling

I've been rather stumped by some behavior on an APX 8000 that I've not seen documented anywhere else. The short of it is, the radio is optioned for WiFi, has a mac address, and is using a template that's been used to get radios onto WiFi in the past, but the radio will not enable WiFi after programming and is not allowing manual intervention to address it.

In the codeplug, I've checked off the "WiFi" menu item, mapped a button to "WiFi On/Off," checked off "WiFi Enable" under "Data Wide," and added a few networks. In the past, from memory, this would allow the WiFi menu to be opened with a soft button or for WiFi to be toggled with a button. However, at present, when the WiFi menu is selected with a softkey, I get the invalid button / "bonk" tone, and nothing happens. The same tone happens when pressing a button mapped to "WiFi On/Off."

The one thing I've been unable to try is the "Allow User Control" checkbox - I see it referenced in the help file, I feel like I had it checked off in the past, but its not showing up even in Expert view. I don't see it in backups of the codeplug from a few months back when things were working either, so I may just be misremembering, but I feel like its likely the problem since I can't recall any other settings relating to WiFi that I could have changed. WiFi is also not enabling by default after programming, which I seem to recall it doing in the past.

The radio is optioned for WiFi in the FC, and in "Radio Info" (and service mode) I can see the WiFi mac address, so it should work. I've used an identical codeplug on identically optioned radios and had WiFi connecting fine for RM programming in the past - it was long enough ago that I was on R30, the only thing that's changed since then is that I'm now on R35.

Are there documented instances of this and/or fixes? I searched around a bit but couldn't find anything. I'm all but certain its a config issue on my part, but I feel like I've tried everything config-wise.

Under data wide you need both Wifi Enable and Allow User Control checked if you want to turn on and off with a button press as you describe. Without those checked the radio should autiomatically connect regardless if Wifi Enable is checked. I would double check SSID, Security Type and password.

Noted - any ideas why "allow user control" might not be showing up? I've verified I'm in Expert view, and have a pretty vivid memory of the option being there back when I was on R30.

As for automatic connection, is there any indication that the radio is looking for a network? I don't get the WiFi icon on the display in any capacity, but I can't remember if its supposed to blink or similar while trying to find a network - manual doesn't say. I'll double-check SSIDs and security settings, and will try throwing it on a basic unsecured network too just to see if it'll find that - I'm not doing anything fancy, just WPA2/PSK (though I really wish the APXs did EAP-TLS like XLs do).

If you have QA09001-Wi-Fi Capability in the flash code it should work. I've had radios in my hand with no wifi MAC and they still allowed setup just would not connect. Most went back to the depot to get fixed.

I dont remember if the portable shows something while searching or not. I dont have my 8K today I grabbed my NEXT.

Odd - I'm not having the option show up, and I do have QA09001 in-flash and marked as used. Not getting any indication that its searching for a network, and not able to get it to connect to hotspots running on W10 or Android (no access point on me today, so Ill test with a proper one when I get home). I'm half-wondering if this is an R35 thing at this point?

EDIT: The radio has a WiFi MAC for what its worth

I opened some backups of old codeplugs in R32.00, and the button is not there either. I feel like I'm going insane now.

Ensure that Transmit Inhibit is turned off if you're using that anywhere in your menu. The radio will not connect to a Wi-Fi network when TX Inhibit is enabled, even if all the other settings / fields are correct.

You should see a little grayed out upside down triangle when connecting to a network.

TX inhibit was it - I cannot believe that! I had that set to the 2-position switch and had toggled it on at some point, made 0 codeplug changes, turned the radio on, flipped the switch and now its working. I cannot believe I didnt think of it. The menu is working now too.

They really should make the thing show "TX Inhibited" on the screen when you hit a WiFi button like it does if you hit the PTT with TX inhibit enabled.

Thanks so much, I have no idea how that didn't cross my mind.

I feel a little silly - I spent hours staring at this and reading documentation last night and didn't figure it out. They really should document this behavior somewhere, the manual makes no mention of TX inhibit impacting the WiFi radio.

Thanks so much for the help!

Did you get "Allow User Control" to show up? Both of my 8000's are WiFi capable but I don't see that field either.

Nope... that one is still beyond me. With that said, I can now toggle WiFi from the menu and with a button. I can't remember if the APX is supposed to let you input an SSID and credentials from the front panel - I want to say you can, but I've also been living in EFJ/Armada-land for the last little bit, so I may just not be remembering right.

You cannot add a wifi SSID or password from the keypad or menu. Only the programmed SSID in the list will work.

@ATK3 Sorry. I'm an idiot. As said earlier I had my Next. When I got home I opened RM and just clicked on radios with SAR_8000. They are actually APX Next. So veried the field is not there on a 8000 or 8500.
