APX encryption question (analog mode)

Hi all.

I own an APX6k with a very basic flash (conventional/analog only) Bought new from a dealer.

My question is this; I'd like to use encryption with fellow enthusiasts. I know it has ADP built in, however since it's an analog radio I understand it cannot be used. What do I need in order to enable DES/DESXL? Does it require me to physically open the radio and install a UCM like the XTS series? Or is it some kind of flash option?

And while on the subject of flash upgrades, anyone know the cost of P25 phase 1?

You have to Buy the Option for it. cant be flashed in it, has to be dune with a KVL-4000 and a Flash Chip from God

Haha thanks. So I have to physically add a chip?

Not to the radio. Just to the KVL,4000. That loads the encryption and entitlement key for the encryption. The radio has a built-in UCM you just have to pay for Motorola to activate the other encryption modes

First, to enjoy encryption with the radio you need Astro 25 enabled in the flashcode. ADP, DES-OFB/DES-XL, and AES-256 are all digital voice encryption algorithms. The APX radios do not support analog encryption.

Second, to add DES-XL or OFB to the radio you need someone with a KVL-3000, 3000+, or 4000. The 3000 series KVLs require a PCMCIA card from Motorola that adds/activates the algo in the MACE of the APX or UCM of an XTS/XTL. The 4000 requires a activation code from Motorola to enable a certain number of "hits" to be added to the KVL that can then be passed on to the subscriber unit.

Before a algo can be added to a subscriber unit the algo has to be activated in the KVL which requires a different PCMCIA or activation code and is particular to the serial number of the KVL.

To add AES-128/256 and ADP you have to have a 3000+ or 4000.

To add keys of a MACE or UCM you have to have a KVL with the associated algo.

APX radios most certainly DO support analog encryption using des, desxl or dvpxl and 5 kHz bandwidth!

Thanks all. Yes I thought AES/DES, etc was for analog as well as digital.. pretty sure my old analog Saber and XTS 2500 (in analog) had it, but I never activated it. Still learning my way around the APX radio.
