• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

it all depends on the options. i know that some of the flash options such as Moto trunking or P25 can be 1500 or more EACH. basically you are paying a software rights fee, because all the radios have all the hardware required to do it.

for public safety use, being ruggedized is VERY important. if you don't believe me ask all the LEO's that had to carry MTX8250s for a year or so. they beg to get XTS series portables!

My knowledge of the capabilities of this radio are limited. What makes them worth over $6000?

Not to go all political here but if Government agencies are really spending over $6000 per radio it is no wonder we are in such bad shape. We cannot keep doing this. Political rant off.

Proven reliability is worth the money.

also he mentions it is FPP but makes no mention of the dongle. you have to have the dongle on it to make changes via FPP. wonder if he includes it with them or not?

So far every APX I've seen has not required a dongle for FPP operation.

the MSWIN contract gives a special price break, and that price is good ONLY for government entities in MS. they can buy them cheaper than dealers can! i won't go into details on it, but under the state contract they get it a lot cheaper from Moto than a dealer can.

at list price with every option they can be quite high. the dual band radio would be nearly 7500.00 to joe blow on the street.

APX On Ebay.

I have seen this ad too. That seems sort of expensive for not buying through a Dealer & No returns or guarentee. I Would buy from a dealer if I was going to spend that kind of money.

Yeah I understand that David although I had no idea the discount was that huge. My comment was also in answer to someone saying government entities were paying out the nose for these things.

APX dongle FPP is option Q53

APX dongle free FPP is Q52.

I am with a State agency and tried like heck to order the APX with Q52, was told no way no how unless the purchaser is Federal. Note that the majority of APX radios being sold right now are dongle free. Some of the flash codes on these radios show Q53, but in fact are dongle free. I have confirmed this with a few people that have APX radios purchased on line, flash shows Q53 but FPP is dongle free. Apparently the seller(s) have figured out a hack, or is flashing Q53 radios to Q52 somehow.

I was in Schaumburg / Motorola HQ recently for training and talked to a higher up about trying to get a Q52 flash. No luck. I mentioned the Ebay radios. He stated someone is probably hacking them.

If any readers here know how to make a Q53 flash dongle free I sure would appreciate a PM. The dongle is a pain to use and of course is useless when the speaker mic is on.

APX Dongle.

I don't know if the option is aval or not. I talked to one Motorola Dealer & he said that unless you were Federal Govt, that i couldn't get Q52 as an option.

yeah how can a 2 week old radio be out of warranty already? he does not want someone to turn him in to Motorola, because he knows the unit is stolen. my shop does not run serial numbers to Moto, but you can bet if a 11,000.00 radio came in we would make a call or two if we had any suspicions.

also he mentions it is FPP but makes no mention of the dongle. you have to have the dongle on it to make changes via FPP. wonder if he includes it with them or not?

If it has Q52 it doesn't need the dongle. Q53 does however.

sooomoney, if it has Q52 it is a federal radio is highly illegal for any non-federal agency to own/operate. no one is going to turn you in over it, but should the FCC show up and find you in possession they can and likely will levy a huge fine. this is why Moto will not sell Q52 to just anyone, even i as a dealer cannot order that option for a demo radio.

If anybody was at Dayton this year APX's were all over the place. There was also an "individual" ? who was re flashing the radios to everything the radio was capable of, whether it had the hardware in it or not. So I wouldn't be so surprised about the dongle free FPP.
Their is apparently a flaw in the operating system (CE I think) that has allowed this whore flashing. They didn't let me get close enough to see what they were doing. They all were hooked up prior to arrival, and unless you were known to them ahead of time you couldn't get near them.
