This "triad" of VFO's simply adds greater versatility to the operation of the radio, although VFO A and B also serve a special purpose in allowing users to "Search" between the frequencies stored in those two VFO's using the VSR function of the radio. And you can move data between VFO's simply by using the (F)unction and then "Pass" buttons. Everyone has different needs and purposes for the radio, so having these three VFO's available just gives added flexibility.

In terms of Noise and Level squelches, and Auto-Squelch vs. other modes, you will have to experiment to see what works for you. And don't forget about VSQ (Voice Squelch). The manual is really not clear about the "whys and wherefores" of the various squelch modes, so depending on your listening habits and other factors, the best way to see what is suitable for your own purpose, it's pretty much trial and error to determine which settings are best.

In some respects, the manual is very nicely prepared and presented, but as you discovered, it often leaves the reader without more complete explanations of functions that might be helpful. So it's really best to experiment--- I've stumbled upon some neat things that I've shared in my "Tips & Tricks" thread here in the forum.
