I noticed that I can depress the thumbwheel and it engages with a click, like a switch. It doesn't seem to do anything, though.

Anyone know more about this?

@eorange

On page 15 of the user manual it says ...

MAIN DIAL
This recessed rotary control is intended to be scrolled up and down using the thumb of your left hand (although you may adjust it using the middle finger of your right hand etc). Primarily this is the tuning control, upward rotation tunes the AR8200 upward in frequency and downward rotation tunes downward in frequency using the selected tuning step size. When the “FUNC” legend is displayed, the tuning speed will be increased. The main dial is also used to move between menus and manipulate input through menus (generally mimicking the arrow keys).

Note: The main dial also has a switch capability, this is why the main dial has lateral movement. However, this switch capability is not used by the AR8200.

Hope this helps?

It is unused but is easy to reach and solder a wire to on the circuit board. I don't remember what I used it for, it was 20 years ago, but probably to temporarely turn on backlight or attenuator.

Thanks guys - I haven't cracked the manual open in a long while, but I should've phrased my question better...I meant to say: any background on why it has a switch which isn't used? Ever seen this on other AOR models?

@Ubbe - that is a fantastic idea! A temporary backlight would be a awesome. I am very skilled with circuits, wiring, and soldering, but I wonder how you found a pad that makes the backlight go high? You did say it was 20 years ago :) but any insight would be appreciated.

I had the schematics for it and later someone uploaded copies of it to the yahoo forum which where later moved to groups.io
I think I also made another mod to add hysterese to the squelch so it wouldn't stutter if the signal where right at the edge of opening the SQ.
It's just a resistor to add positive feedback to the squelch circuit to make it switch more to off and to on without being able to stay in the middle.

That's really cool. I'll do some digging.
