I am interested in purchasing a handheld scanner. I recently heard about this radio sold by Scanner Master; the AR8200MKIIIB receiver, also a handheld. I was wondering which handheld scanner would be better. Is this really a scanner that works similar to the Bearcat 396XT. Please let me know your thoughts....weighout pros and cons. Thanks so much, Vincentz2.

Hi Vincentz2,welcome to RadioReference. :)

This is a classic "apples to oranges" comaparison.

If your home location is serviced by a trunktracking system with digital transmissions, then Uniden's BCD 396XT would be the better choice.
You have a large virtual memory capacity with this unit.

I'm sure the AR8200 is a great receiver, but it is just that. You can use it for scanning conventional analog freq's that are not part of Motorola, LTR,EDACS trunked systems.
Consider it another "tool in the toolbox" and can be used for other types of monitoring.

Go to the Radio models link in the WIKI and read the features of both.

Precisely. An comparable scanner to the BCD396XT, and 996XT would be the GRE PSR-500, and 600, or the Radio Shack PRO-106 etc...
