Richard,
I have much more in life than this, namely my family, including three children. But for my family to be comfortable, I have to earn a living doing what I know.
For those who don't make a living off this, it might seem like we should "get over it", but this change has had an immediate effect on my income and therefore my family.
Our business has been set up around the ability to respond to incidents quickly, and I have an excellent reputation to do so and supply unprecedented breaking-news vision at times. For 20 years I have provided - free of charge - incident vision to the Police, Ambos and Firies for training/de-briefing purposes. The Towies regularly help the Police when they are out and about on the road. No more.
So, yes, perhaps it is "tough luck to us" and "I have to get over it". But it does affect us and our ability to live because it is all I know. Have been doing it for 20 years.
I am not ashamed to say, along with my family, it is my life, because to be successful at news, you have to live it. We do not have the luxury of working 9 to 5, Monday to Friday. News doesn't choose when it happens, conveniently during work hours.
Unlike the Towies, however, who now have no other option but to shut up shop, we are fortunate that news does not just mean "breaking news". I can earn a living - albeit somewhat less financial - by filming old women turning 100.
I am sure you would turn on the news of an evening just so you could watch that stuff.
