To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

are annoying EDACS "beeps" present when scanning radio input frequencies on such a system?

i'm going to Corpus Christi for New Year's and will only be taking a yaesu HT - i want to know if the beeping will drive me nuts while scanning input frequencies...

or does that only happen on the outputs?

I believe the "Beeps" are only on the output repeaters. Similar to lots of "end of transmission" beeps found on lots of amateur radio repeaters.

...just be glad you don't have to listen to the
old "GE Jingle" that went along with the pre-EDACS system (GE 16-Plus I think it was called).

I don't recall ever hearing them on inputs.

The beeps are part of a time-out signalling
("dotting") sequence of a 1-0-1-0.. pattern at
9600bps.

Funny you should mention the old "GE Jingle".

The Ottawa County, OH system used to have that on their system. I used to be able to pick them up when the conditions were just right. It really confused me when I was hearing EDACS traffic on a Motorola system as Geauga County, OH & Ottawa County, OH share a few frequencies.

the EDACS beeps and occasional buzzsaws ARE present on the input frequencies.

That's odd

You would think they would only be on the repeater outputs just like on some business repeaters and Amateur Radio repeaters.

You know, the more that I research this interesting question, the more that things become apparent.

The annoying EDACS beeps should NOT be transmitted on the inputs to the system.

These "beeps" are nothing more than 4800hz tones which, if decoded by a FSK application, would register as nothing more than a 101010101010101...... - which will tell the radio to unmute and return to the control channel.

Muddy, if you are actually hearing these EDACS beeps on the input frequencies, then it would suffice to say that:

1. you are going crazy
2. your scanner is picking up images
3. you are thinking that 851-869 freqs are inputs.
4. see #1

Your master site
San Diego Gas and Electric in California still uses a system that produces the GE Jingle. Ahh, the old days. And yeap, the radios said '16 Plus' on them.

I think they'll be scrapping the system so they can sell the 800 freqs and move to a 900 SmartZone system. When I was in SD for the Holidays it looked like the system was in its installation stages.

Kidding Muddy... KIDDING :)

1. I posted the San Onofre Data on this web site - it was sent in as a submission. I suppose that any terrorist that wanted to use the data would have a REAL tough time otherwise trying to figure it out. Please ....spare me. In any case, I dunno what this has to do with EDACS beeps or the price of beans or whatever....

2. Ok, that's a nice scanner. But, if you are hearing the beeps on the input frequencies, then I think you are mistaken. You might be hearing the buzzsaws, but those are probably part of the MDT infrastructure of the Corpus System.

3. Hey, anything is possible. I recall some skip from the AEP systems down in Corpus being reported as the new San Antonio system being brought up - remember that thread in November? We battled on and on regarding that one...

You ask a question, get an answer, and then want to debate it? Why ask at all if feedback isn't welcome? ...and then to make a characterization that I am helping terrorists? Jeeze...

Buzz Saw

Lindsay
Although I would agree that the buzz saw on the input is the likely product of MDT operation, I also believe that it is used on the output as another deterrent to listening with a coventional scanner. And I thought the jingle was bad enough. I may be wrong but anything is possible. But with the EDAC scanners available, it's pretty much a moot point now.

Edacs beeps

I know this is a old post but worth a try.

I'm getting the beeps (tone) during a Provoice call causing dsd to stop decode and failure to get the full transmission.

Too bad there isn't a filter to put in between SDR->*filter*->VBcable->dsd

I don't see a reason for the thread resurrection nor am I even sure what your question is. If you need help with DSD then please ask in the proper forum, and start your own thread while you're at it (hijacking is against the rules). Thanks.
