Are OPP Vehicle Repeater no longer analog?

Hi, does anyone know if the OPP has moved from analog VR in their units to digital? I see there is now a digital vehicle repeater frequency on P25 in the RR database. I may be out of loop but my VR frequency channels on my analog radio used to be quite active while driving around and have now gone silent. I believe there was a frequency shuffle a few months back that I may have missed and need to update my radio or is it something else? Thanks.

I'm here a lot
I don't know where you are located, but in Toronto I am only noticing the Bolton repeater as analog and the Queen's Park Patrol as well. 411.3125 was used extensively, but not much anymore. Time to initiate Search Mode in my scanner.

Located in GTA and surrounding regions/counties. Mainly York and Peel and Dufferin areas. Used to be able to pickup VR1 on my analog radio often when OPP units were around. VR1 has been silent for me for the last few months at least.

OPP in the GTA are using the new 771 MHz frequencies and are still analog (for now). If you're only monitoring the UHF VR frequencies, you won't hear anything.

I'm in Mississauga and I've personally heard the OPP on 771.74375.

Thanks for the info. That is unfortunate as my analog radio is only UH/VHF and cannot receive 700 MHz.

It is hard to advise on if its worth upgrading your hardware. Once PSRN goes active the DVRS frequencies will be encrypted too.

Wouldn't that add unneeded complexity in an emergency? Or am I missing something?
I'm sure it will. We all know that whenever a new system goes online there will always be glitches and hiccups. Will we know about them? Maybe or maybe not.

Any news when Bell is working on Zone: 2?
A good way to tell is by the colour of the antennas, if they are black they have the new radios in them.

Encryption is generally transparent to the user. Encryption does not change the data format that is being used (P25P1 or P25P2). Since the radios are programmed to be in encryption mode at all times there is nothing that needs to be changed or selected.

The DVRS system is transparent to encryption.

It also passes the RID through as well, so other users will see the portable RID, not the mobile RID the DVRS is connected to.

There are other features that make the DVRS system virtually impossible to tell its being used.

Modern DVRS systems are not the clunky junk of yester years.

There is an all-or-nothing approach to the new system -- the new system switch over will not happen until ALL agencies who will use the system are 100% ready. Then, and only then will the new system be activated. Enjoy the analog while it lasts. The radios come programmed with the current system and PSRN configured, so on cutover day, the radio users simply need to do a zone & channel change on the radios, and away they go.

So then, is the whole province going to switch at once? Are they going to switch by Comm Centre or CACC??? Your cart Blanche statement is pretty vague. Of course all agencies will have to be 100% ready as well the system has to be 100% ready .

Likely it will be by zone and I'm just relaying what I was told during radio training.

Common sense should dictate it be done zone by zone in case something goes sideways.

It will be by zone. Zone 1 first, then Zone 2, etc. You can kind of follow the preparations by seeing which units have new hardware installed and following the addition of the PSRN control channels in the areas.

It appears that all the zone 1 control channels have been set up and tested. Many are sitting in idle mode although a few are active for logins for testing
