Have you considered looking at old military gear? They've been using lowband HTs for decades (the PRC-6 comes to mind). And don't just confine yourself to US stuff. There's plenty of Soviet-Bloc/Eastern European/Western European gear out there. I happen to be a collector of this stuff, and have several. The major drawback with most military radios is that they are normally isolated to 25, 50, 75, or 100 KHz steps (depending on the model). I have a West German SEM-52S and that works pretty well. Unfortunately, you need to pull off the front cover and turn several switches inside to adjust the frequency, and it only has one channel, as is the case with most of these. If you wanted more channels, you could get a PRC-128 (it has 10). I would recommend the Thales PRC-148 MBITR, which I have, but those are fairly hard to come by and are also fairly expensive. Don't even get me started about the Harris PRC-152. There's one on eBay right now, and the auction price is up to around $5000!
