Don't feel like the lone ranger on having a problem with repeater lists that are incorrect. It seems
like the ego of a number of people to have a repeater listed with their name on it is just too
much to pass up. The problem gets propagated through time because the coordinators don't
take the time to follow up on any of the repeaters they have listed.

It seems a thankless task for any repeater coordinator to try and keep their list of repeaters
with only the active ones. Problem is they don't have a clue if a repeater is on the air or not.
Like if you do any traveling in the Washington DC and northern Virginia area you will find a
large number of repeaters listed. When you try to bring them up, you find they are not on the
air or have not listed the correct tone to be able to get into them. Unless someone sends
this information to the repeater coordinators, life goes on like a brook running downhill.

There is a good saying that goes "Garbage in garbage out" and you are seeing this in real life
all over the country. If the coordinators are fed incorrect information, that is the information that
gets published. Then you have the few groups that have access to repeater sites due to their work.
They build up these great repeaters and then try to hide them. The repeaters are listed, but
not the correct input information. Like they list a tone on the input of say 156.7 Hz and instead
use a digital tone squelch code. They don't use a standard input frequency so unless you spend
a good amount of time searching while they are on the air, you will never find what they are
using. That is their choice as it is their equipment and efforts on the radio system. It keeps
out the non invited from their radios.

Such is life in the big world of 2 meter ham repeaters across the country. If you do run across an
active repeater but can;t get into it, you can always try playing dial a tone till you hit the right one.
On another note, many repeaters now have some sort of anti kerchuncker filter built in. What this
does is prevent the repeater from being keyed up for the first time when there is no activity with
just a simple keying of your radio. They need several seconds of carrier and in some cases also
require audio to be on the input signal. So it may take keying up and giving your call before you
will get back a tail from the repeater.
