Are user names transmitted or stored in radio like a scanner

I work for a county utility in the engineering department. The other day
my boss walks in and sits a a handheld radio on my desk. This unit
is used by him to talk to field personel utlyzing the counties EDACS system.
I had never noticed before, but every time there was a transmission.
The users LAST NAME and DEPARTMENT came upon the display!

Having programed a "trunk tracker", I was aware that you could "INPUT"
and view some of this data (department) but...


Question: Is the user name text transmitted, or is just a numerical code
transmitted and accesing text information stored in the radio?

Because of this I downloaded and installed T4WIN and began
decoding signals from the System. Using ICOM PCR 1000, I'm getting
a 90%+ decode rate. And the database is accumulating
talk group ID numbers and Radio Id numbers. But all "LABELS" are
"unidentified".

Am I missing some of the data that's out there?
Can I get more from T4WIN or do I just need to type in
the labels my self?

You'll have to assign labels youself in T4Win. If the user-specific info is transmitted, T4Win can't make heads or tails of it.

You need to alphatag each individual radios ID yourself. The system only knows each radio as a number. If a name and department comes up on the display its because somebody associated the radios ID with it. I'm not sure though if this info (texttagging) is stored locally in the radio, or within the EDACs system itself as a part of the datastream. My guess would be locally at the radio.

I can't speak for EDACS, but I can't see it being too much different than Motorola..

Big M radios are identified by a six-digit number that starts with a 7. When that radio transmits, its ID is transmitted as that number. The units receiving that transmission - be they other similar radios, base station consoles, T4Win setups, etc etc etc., receive only the number.

It's up to the receiving unit to have a database of which numbers belong to whom. For example, a radio that's in the system as 705052 will show up that way anywhere on the system. *IF* a receiver has a database that says that 705052 = Lieutenant Smith, then the receiver will show "Lieutenant Smith" instead.

As for what department they work in, that possibly could be the channel (talkgroup) ID, which is handled the same way as radio IDs in my system, except they start with 8s, not 7s.

EDACS is pretty much the same way. You can program each radio to identify the radio ID numbers... I may have mine set up to display radio ID number 5625 as Justin, where you may have Lt Justin or Lt Musgraves. As far as showing department affiliation, i'm not sure.
