For anyone who monitors these guys (they are quite active today, one guy wearing a body wire in a sting), what agency is this, or is it multi-agency, and why do they use the APS trs? Don't all the agencies have their own surveillance frequencies? Why the APS system?

I believe this will answer your biggest question, who is this.

As far as using the APS TRS, it is statewide. Looking at the participants in AFIT, it makes sense to use a common radio that can be used statewide....

Here are some interesting articles related to the above...

Wow - I feel like I've been living in a cave... never thought to scan the APS system and I've lived out here for AGES. I'll have to give 'em a listen.

If anyone else is interested, you can find the freq's and TGID's here: http://www.radioreference.com/apps/db/?sid=2350

-AZ

And if you listen to this system at 10am on Wednesday mornings you will the DEMA folks do a test of the AZ State EOC net....

Question about the APS TRS: What site is best to listen off of when living in Phoenix area? I have given this system a try and have not heard anything yet, and looking at the database info, the towers seem REALLY far away for me to be able to pick them up here but PHOENIX_SCANNER seems to be able to. A little help?

I got the info from the southwest scanner guide. But tonight I will try to post info if nobody has a link.

There is a lot of activity on this system, so you will hear plenty. Hidden in there will be the taskforce. The cool thing for scanner people is that I don't even think encryption is an option on this system, so you hear all the action.

Hopefully bad guys don't take advantage of this as well, but I doubt that very many non-scanner people will ever even think of buying a trunking scanner then loading in APS systems. Not likely. Only a true scanner person would take the time to listen to such a system for no apparent reason.

That is probably all the security they need.

That is a good point. I doubt many people would think to look in the APS system for much of anything. I know I never thought of it. So hopefully I can get that up and running and catch some action. I have a SW Directory on the way but I wont get it until next week...

Are you not hearing anything because the system is quiet or because you can't even hear the control channel to track the system? These systems, like other TRS systems, require you to be relatively near to the intended use area.

Then there are reception holes that happen for a myriad of reasons. For example, the Mt Lemmon South tower can not be heard along the foothills of the Catalina Mountains, nor to the NW of Tucson, until you get past Marana. It's a pretty big hole :<

I know the systems up there are pretty active. I have them plugged in when I make the trip up there. I haven't been disappointed with hearing traffic, BUT, I must say it will normally not be exciting. Normally you'll hear power company type communications without any real flare :)

There are still a number of towers throughout the state that we have not identified the control channels for yet. Help is always appreciated by submitting the data to us to update it on the APS page. If you do submit, please ensure the ID is correct. You will notice that some neighboring towers use the same control channels :< It'll be important to verify the transmitting tower ID.
