So how long will it be till the entire armer system is encrypted rendering all expensive digital scanners worthless?Several mpls gestapo channels are already encrypted.
This seems to be a taboo subject on many communication websites as they are usually filled
with shills trying to peddle expensive scanners that will soon become doorstops.

ARMER Encryption?

Nobody knows the answer to that since it is up to the users to use encryption.

I'd say that complete encryption is unlikely to happen due to cost. It is around $425 to add encryption to a radio. So those that do not have this capability would have to be replaced.

Motorola does have a low-level encryption component that can be used, however it is Motorola propietary, meaning that Kenwood or Johnson radios are unable to use that. So if you have agencies that bought non-Motorola radios for cost reasons, they would be unable to use that low-level encryption.

Same topic differnt day

There have been encrypted channels used by LE in the twin cities area long before ARMER. The departments and units that were encrypted on vhf and uhf are the main groups encrypted on ARMER. Many interoperable channels are required by state or Federal mandate to be in the clear not encrypted. It is highly highly unlikely that main dispatch tgs in this area will go to encryption anytime , evening the talkgroups that currently are designed for encrypted traffic are not all 100% encryptred.

An encryption board would run ~$100 max per radio.Do not forget your friends in China, home of the $30
cell phone jammer.
DealExtreme: $29.89 Handheld 5-Band Cell Phone Signal Blocker (0.5W/h)
Surprising how little quality products cost if you elliminate the greedy middleman.
It's sad how a hobby I use to enjoy has turned into nothing more than a ploy to sell another receiver
every few years.
Scanning has become a greed driven racket just like the radar and lidar industries,
sell the latest fool-proof speed detection devices then release a detector for it a few years later.

Yeah, I'm sure the reason Minnesota and other states spent millions of dollars on the digital trunked systems is so that Uniden and RS/GRE could sell a few $500 scanners.

there is much more cost than just the radios you have train the users for one.

Also isn't the main propose of the 800 system so all agency can talk to each other in a disaster etc?

We've all heard this before. The sky was falling a few years ago and mysteriously nothing has changed. Encryption is an expensive add on for agencies that in many cases are struggling to find money.

Encryption Technical Issues

My agency has used encryption for tactical operations for a number of years (Motoroloa P-25 wide area like your system). The problem for us is not the cost, it is the XTS5000 dropping the encrytion key at the worst possible times. We have come to the point where we have to reset the keys in all the radios before an operation to make sure that they are in synch. Simply removing the battery, having a dirty battery contact or putting the radio in the charger while it is still on all seem to be culprits. For this reason, there is no way our techs could manage the encryption keys on more than a handful of radios used for special purposes that REALLY need encryption.

When dealing with motorola p25 radios.

There is a cheaper option. ADP encryption. No addon hardware. Software based and key loaded through CPS software.

My county wide system uses that for all users who need encryption. Does the job effectively. And moto only charges 75-100 to flash a unit for it.

ADP encryption is a Motorola format and will only work with Motorola radios only. The keys can only be loaded into the radios using software CPS. ADP encryption can not be loaded into consoles. This format can only be used between Motorola radios only and is not fully interoperable.
DES-OFB encryption is the preferred use. It will work with multi vendor radios. Encryption keys can be loaded into radios with a keyloader. This format will also work with encryption to consoles. This format will work with all radios and consoles and is fully interoperable.
