Hello! I have loved listening to the police scanner sense I was a kid. It sucked when I found out that my "NASCAR" scanner I bought off layaway so many years ago wouldn't hold up much longer...

Than came the fire sale... I got myself a PRO-196!

So it's setup pretty well and I went ahead and got myself WIn500 and now am waiting for the cable to come from Amazon so I can really set this up. So here is my site question..

I currently live in Minneapolis near the U (Como area). I have it currently set with the Minneapolis City Center site. Does it hurt anything by adding in all the Henneipin county, Ramsey county and Minneapolis sites as well all under the same TSYS?

Minneapolis City Center is the state's simulcast in the cities, Minneapolis and Henneipn county will primarily be on Henneipn E/W and Minneapolis N_S and Ramsey County stuff will be on Ramsey. Have a look at this to see where talkgroups you're interested in primarily are affiliated Talkgroups/Site

What are you interested in hearing?

On City Center, I would estimate you are getting maybe 60% of Minneapolis Fire dispatches. Most of Minneapolis Police Ch 1,2 and 3, but not very much of the other Minneapolis Police channels. For Minneapolis Police/Fire, Minneapolis N/S is a better site choice, I think.

I don't actually have a traditional scanner, so I am not positive, but I would suggest picking the smallest set of sites that cover what you want to listen to. You can get some idea of which talkgroups are on which site on this terribly unwieldy web page I made (hover over a percentage to see which site that column is). http://radio-stats.johnmoe.com/talkgroup_site.html

Me being the "Minneapolis scanning junkie" I am when travelling up there, have all of the sub-systems in the Metro area programmed. If I am out of range for any of them, the scanner merely passes them over, sort of like skipping over an inactive conventional frequency.

If you program the desired talkgroup IDs and the sub-systems/sites in the Metro area, the odds of receiving the desired TGs increase.

Great! This is what I was looking for. I am just making sure it wont do more harm than good.
