I'm new to the ARTCC monitoring scene, so please pardon my ignorance. I'm wanting to monitor the Chicago/KC/Indy ARTCC frequencies, but not sure which ones to program into my scanner. I found the list of them on here as well as several other sites, but is it overkill to program them all in? I've got a BC246T so right now I've got a group for each ARTCC (Chicago, KC, and Indy). I noticed there's about 12 frequencies that are shared by 2 of the ARTCC's, so when those are active I'm not sure which ARTCC they're using. I guess it's not that big of a deal, just trying to learn more about it. Thanks!!

The easiest way to come up with super reliable info is to monitor the tower frequency. They will tell departing aircraft to contact departure/XX Center (LA center here in Vegas) once they have left the airspace that the tower controls. When there are transient aircraft (not based at that field) they will often ask what the frequency is. The tower tells them what freq to use and now you know what to use and you that it is current not from a list made 10 years ago from some hick liquored up on corn alkeyhol! If you are at a major airport there will be a channel set aside just to give commercial aircraft their IFR clearance. When they talk to the plane they give him all the details of where he is going to fly VOR to VOR etc. And they will also give the departure frequency here not on the tower freq.

Airnav can be of some help if you are looking for the clearance delivery channel.

hope this will help a little. You might also ask in forums for the ATCC you want to listen to, like IL, or IN forums.

Yeah, we have a very small airport here in town. I just like hearing all the planes passing through the area that are going to the bigger cities. Thanks for the info, I will post over in the IL forum.

This method will still work. Any plane flying IFR (Instrument Flight Rules) will have to file with the FAA. In poor weather, bigger planes (turbo props), or just people training/practicing IFR will still have to be in contact with the FAA, which will give you opportunities to catch ARTCC freqs
