Saturday night I heard some "NI" units in West Asheville conducting some type of stake out for several hours on TG #7760. Are these NARCs or something else. Never heard these units before.

I believe Nx units are ALE agents. The letter following the "N" indicates the district.

NI units are ALE
You are correct....NI units are Asheville area ALE units. They used to be NJ, but changed when districts re-aligned several years ago. ALE in this area currently carry 800 radios and can access either the Asheville city system and the VIPER system. They still have the lowband radios in vehicles and can be heard on 42.84 (ALE channel 1) and I have heard out-of-area units on 42.74 (ALE channel 2).
