I've worked at this and worked at this. I've read existing posts. I've searched this forum. I've read and read two icecast tutorials. To no avail.

Anyone interested in providing some assistance in getting a feed running?

Edit - Sorry. Just re-read your post. Didn't notice you mentioning icecast on my first read.

How are you wanting to feed?
Wanting to send a feed that WinAmp specifically will be able to be used to hear/connect by. WME and TeamSpeak are easy, those I've done. What I want and need to get done is a feed that WinAmp can be used with.

Thanks.

This is the route Im going EasyStream. I have tried the demo client and its very cool.
I've no problem(s) with BuTeL's software packages, just looking for a way to do this for less money, but the primary goal is having WinAmp as the client.

Thanks.

I've read it fifteen times at least. And the other version of the same tutorial fifteen times. What I'm running into is along the lines of a setting, or two, or a port issue . . . something I've not identified.

Please be more specific...I and I'm sure others will be happy to help you. I hate to refer you to the tutorials you've read time and time again, but is there something that you or us are missing? Are you having trouble with your router that perhaps is not letting "non" local connections through?

Please let us know...do you have an ISP which changes your IP address A LOT (like daily or more frequently)?

The issue may be a setting or two within your server OR your router. It is hard to tell without more info...

This is not an arduous task, so please keep the faith... It's simply a matter of having incoming connections talking to the right computer in your network.

Aside from the tutorial that I mentioned earlier, I had to utilize a few things that I learned in other forums and in other threads on this site. Let me see if I can help a little (using just basic information and assuming several things).

Is your connection between the scanner and PC up and working. Use any VOX recorder (I use Xcorder) to ensure that your connection there is working correctly, or just watch the meter in Simplecast to see if you are actually getting audio to the PC.

You will want to use a port that is not assigned to anything else. Those ports that are considered unassigned can be found on the internet. Try this site for help: http://www.iana.org/assignments/port-numbers.

Next, you will want to open that port in your router, assuming you have a router. That router port will have to allow incoming connections, or no one will be able to hear your feed. See your router's documentation for more information on this.

Also, if using a router, your IP address is NOT the address you get when you type ipconfig from a command line. That address is the internal, private address of your PC. I had to go into the configuration of the router to get the actual IP address.

You will want to use no-ip.com to manage your IP address using DNS. ISPs will occasionally release your IP address and assign you a new one for some reason. When your IP changes, then the information needed to hear your feed is no longer valid. No-ip.com will assign you a DNS name, then a client piece installed on your PC will make necessary changes with their database. Take a look at http://www.no-ip.com/services/managed_dns/free_dynamic_dns.html for more information.

As an example, my feed is located at http://radioscanner.bounceme.net:8000/live
- radioscanner.bounceme.net is the no-ip.com DNS name
- 8000 is the port (probably not the best choice, but it works)
- live is the name of my feed, set in either Simplecast or Icecast

And just as an FYI, my feed is located at http://firestormphoto.com/scanner. On that link is also information on how to listen in Winamp and Windows Media Player, and I also have an embedded Windows Media Player feed located there. Don't expect a whole lot of activity on my feed... it is generally pretty quiet.

Good luck. We will get you there all in good time.

Chris

Being more specific -
* OS is Win XP Pro w/service pack 2
* Qwest DSL Actiontec modem & router [1500k up/900k down]
* firewall in the router is off, no software firewall active on the PC
* No-ip DUC (v2.2.1) used since I do not have a public IP
* icecast2 as the server (v2.x)
* WinAmp (v5.35) with the LAME MP3 plug-in (v1.6.3) for oddcast 's DSP (v3)
* have tried ports :8000, :8080, :8245; :7000, 3128 so far

no-ip does fine
icecast runs fine
oddcast plug-in runs fine (as far as I see)

the port selected or/and the port forwarding is what is my problem in my opinion

* * *
* TeamSpeak works fine
* WME works fine
Those two do not support WinAmp as a client (does WME?) which is the primary goal

Have you opened port 8000 in Windows?

Start/Control Panel/Windows Firewall/Exceptions/Add Port.....8000

Have you told your router to direct all "calls" for port 8000 to the computer running Icecast? This is called "Port Fowarding", and must be done to get through the router.

1. No software firewall running = no Windows XP firewall active = no need to add that exception.

2. The ports that I listed are the ports forwarded.

So, no need for the exception and Yes to the port forwarding question.

Thanks.

Page 2 of the Scan Cape Cod tutorial says that Icecast "is the server software that clients will connect to in order to listen to your feed," and Simplecast "is the software that you will use to connect to Icecast and provide the audio." I really don't know that much about either of them. I just installed both, opened the ports in the router, and everything worked. Simplecast supposedly works for 4 hours at a time in demo mode, just in case you want to try to install it and see if it works.

I'm afraid I must point out the obvious.

In a message above, cavis suggested you read this tutorial http://scancapecod.us/livescan/feed_tutorial.pdf

I believe you said you'd read it fifteen times. It clearly states the use of Simplecast. If you do want a connection to Winamp as described in that tutorial I'd suggest you try one more time.

That tutorial got me started, and it works very well.

Lexx,

The one I've read (read first and spent more time with) is located at - http://www33.websamba.com/cnmsales/oddcast%20tutorial.html

Perhaps too much attention was paid to it (since it doesn't include any reference to Simplecast.

Thanks,
`Doug

I've had problems with oddcast. Have you tried the Oddcast stand alone program (independent from Winamp)?

Maybe that is a solution, maybe not.

Perhaps try the Simpecast trial version (limited to 4 hours) and see if that works with your config.
