• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

CVNs are the file type that firmware upgrades are in for the Astro/Astro25 line.
Did a quick good search and I did find the R0672. but it's a bin not the cvn and you state it is. If that helps let me know. Also make sure you click "reply" or "quote" so I know you've replied

So I found those files too. I guess I need someone to explain how that file is used to do a firmware upgrade.

PS- I have all the other software and hardware to do an upgrade. Just need this last piece.

Astro Firmware Upgrades - W9CR - the instructions are all here.
I have read over that form several times. It shows how to upgrade with a normal cvn file. It does not mention anything about .bin files except to back up your radio with one. Even the screenshot of the CPS window shows a cvn file in the directory name for upgrade files. The only file labeled anything about R06.72 is called "R067200.bin".

Excerpt from that W9CR page "Select the firmware CVN file for your radio, and then ensure the bootstrap code and SRIB software is selected..."

So if its in that page I need someone to explain how a .bin file alone can upgrade a radio.

The .bin file is read directly from the chip so you would need a chip programmer.

BIN files in Mototools is pretty much only good for your codeplug backups. For any FW upgrade that doesn't require tearing the radio apart you pretty much  need an SRIB (and for the purposes of this forum, an I button with flashes on it) as it bootstraps the radio during the upgrade. There isn't an invokable ROM like FlashZap on the Astro25's.
