• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hello to anyone who might be able to help that has some knowledge and willing to share.....

I purchased the Astro software from Motorola. [Gotta love the hoops you have to jump through to get it legally but all was fairly easy after you sign the paper work.] I went to install it on my computer and the screen popped up saying, "I need to use Windows98 2nd edition to run the software on the computer".

The ? I have is, what would be the best version of windows/software to help run the RSS on my computer so I can program my Astro Saber? I have Windows98 1st edition on the computer currently but the computer is looking for something more. Any advice or suggestions on what would work best? The computer I am using is of course slow but should work well once I get past this little "hitch". It does have the memory/ram, etc, just looking for this missing piece to the puzzle.

I thought I would post this ? for those who might be a little more knowledgable and able to help someone out.

Thank You and Happy Holidays to all in Radio-America......

I have Windows XP SP2 and it runs flawlessly with Astro Saber CPS. As a matter of fact, CPS is designed on Windows platform so you should have no problem with running on latest machines.

Best bet is to follow the directions that notes the best software to run the CPS on.
I have run it on Win98 second edition, Win2K, and XP with no problems.

The point of confusion here may be between Motorola RSS and CPS. The older DOS based Radio Service Software (RSS), required that you use a computer with a slow (by todays standards) processor. The newer windows based Customer Programming Software (CPS) is designed to run on todays faster machines. So, you do not need to use that older slower computer (unless it's the only one you have of course!) if running CPS.

Hope this helps.

Thank you for the help. I have spoken with a few computer experts as well as just searching for the best answer. I like the fact that the CPS is made for today's computers and that helps answer one of many ?'s I have had. Also that the computers that are slower will not be needed any more. I have heard that an older computer might be needed but that answers another ?.

I am probably going to use Windows XP since I have an extra computer that has that on it and it is a 2002 model, maybe a little slower but overall should do the trick.

I appreciate the help and suggestions.

Happy Holidays and Thank You.
