• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

So just out of curiosity, because I have never seen one in person, does anyone have any photos comparing the size of an Astro Saber to the XTS 5000 or 2500. Or even some of the smaller radios, such as an HT 1250? Thanks for helping out the curiosity.

Astro sabers are generaly bigger than an XTS and HT1250 because of the battery size, even with the smallest battery they are taller. Astro sabers are thinner though.

Yeah. I'm just wondering what they are comparable in size to, maybe an MT 1000 or something larger maybe?

Closest pic I could muscle up. That's a "Rugged" case but approx. the same size. There is also a small Li battery for the Sabers that would bring it down to about the same height as the other radios. If your getting an Astro Saber, make sure you get one with the 1 Meg Vocom board as they can do Narrowband.

So the ones that have 512k cannot do narrow band or can't do splinter or both?

I believe both, but don't quote me. As long as your Astro Saber has a manufacture date of after 11/96 and a firmware of R07.xx.xx . All this is what I have been told, as I have a Saber 1 and need to upgrade for the deadline.

First, turn on your saber and press the side button #2 6 times to go into service mode and important info will move across the screen.

There is the 512k and 1 meg versions
Firmware R07.XX & up has a 1 meg board.
The latest version is a host firmware 1 meg is R07.71.06 (technically .07) & DSP 8.03.05
Firmware R04. & up is IMBE digital - R03. is the original saber version VSELP

All astro sabers will do 12.5 khz, only 1 meg will do the splinter freqs

Maybe a comparison of the size?
The Astro Saber is HUGE. Although the short battery is tolerable

Here's a crappy cell phone image of an APX6000, EFJ 5100, Saber SI, Astro Saber and XTS5000. The Saber SI and Astro Saber have the small Li-Ion batteries on them.

On a slightly different note, the astro saber is so robust, that there are actually tactical manuals available to explain using that radio as a weapon!

Nice collection there, Btw. ;)

what battery on those sabers? The one I posted is a Cut Rate li-ion battery. Anyone also notice the cut rate battery has a lip in the side - other batteries are just flat.

There are a bunch of relatively good shape Astro Saber model 3's on Ebay, but they are the 512k versions. Thought about getting a P25 capable radio, but don't want to pull my pants down with something too big. Lol

Those are the regular OEM Motorola Li-Ion batteries. I've been hoarding them lately as they're hard to find now.

Why do the above batteries have 4 contacts, when the Saber/Astro Saber only has 2 contacts on the bottom. I've got plenty of factory batteries [NTN4992CR] but they all have 2 contacts. GARY N4KVR
