• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Are the spectra and astro spectra control heads interchangeable or will I have to have an astro control head with an astro spectra radio? Thanks.

Yeah, that is what I figured... Well I've got one more question while were still on the subject. I'm looking at two control heads on eBay that I'm sure will both work. The first is HLN6432D (]Motorola Astro Radio Rear Control Head HLN6432D NEW | eBay ) which comes with the housing and HRN6014H (Motorola Astro Radio Rear Control Head Face Plate HRN6014H New | eBay) which doesn't come with the housing. The model number of the radio is D04UJH9PW9AN and has been converted to a remote mount. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Unless I'm misunderstanding what you are proposing here, there's a problem. First, you need a front control head if you don't already have a good one, not a rear control head, and the radio model number indicates a W9 head. The eBay items are W7 rear control head items.

How to use those old Spectra Control Heads

Had an Astro W9 control head die the other day. A resistor on the board burnt out causing the HV section to cease powering the fluorescent display. Rather than have a patrol down until the shop could make the board repair or get a new one from the big "M" we took a stab in the dark. Took one of our old Spectra 1073D control heads and plugged it in. It powered up with "MODE 0" on the display but no functionality. On a whim we cracked it open to see what may be different. The ONLY difference was the firmware chip version. We took the firmware chip (sorry didn't write down numbers.... :O) from the bad Astro Spectra head and put it in the old Spectra A9 head. Plugged that sucker in and lo and behold it thinks its an Astro W9 now. So folks, don't throw out your old Spectra stuff as it may come in handy years later.
