• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I've used these forums and the database for years to monitor local municipalities, railroad, aircraft and so on and to help build my knowledge of radios as good as I can. So now I finally made an account to pick the minds of others. I'm going to be making an attempt at restoring an old police car that wouldve had an astro spectra vhf with a w9 head. I've been able to find a few complete in car remote mount set ups on Ebay from anywhere between 250 and 400 which seems a little high especially since this doesn't include any channel programming (I found a few xtl5000 in the 150 mhz range for 400 so that's why I say high). I've also found astro siren units with the amp, wiring and the dek for around 200 as well. Still seems a little high.
Now the car originally had a remote mount w9 head that was programmed between 154 to 158mhz and the keypad on the w9 was programmed to control the siren functions instead of the dek accessory keypad. I'd like to have a functional siren and radio setup in the car. Everyone local has made the switch to 800mhz trunked or is about to so having frequencies in the 150 to 162 range is okay. Plus I am an fra licensed railroad employee and plan to have railroad channels in there as well.

So my real questions are:
1. Do those prices seem high for old school equipment? Or would I be better off piecing it together since I already have the w9 heads?
2. How hard is it to program these radios and where would I start or obtain the software? I'm not computer savvy at all so I'd preferably like to find someone local who could assist with the setup and programming of the system to make sure I dont screw it up.
3. Well there isnt a 3 but I'm open to any suggestions or ideas you guys (or gals) may have. I'm a little tight on budget as my finances this year have had major hits so please keep that in mind before you tell me to blow a grand on something. Thank you all and thank you for letting me in to the community.

1. Seems about right. The thing with VHF/UHF stuff is that there is still a healthy market for anything that can be programmed with Windows XP (or higher) software and used in the ham band. Non-ASTRO Spectras are much cheaper because of leaking capacitors and ancient CPS. If you look at one of the othe r products, like an XTS5000, you will see that VHF and UHF R-Band typically go for way more than UHF T-Band and 800MHz since the former two can be used with amateur radio.

2. Software programming will be difficult. Your best bet would be as you began to thought, taking it to a friendly Motorola shop that has the software on hand, or the guys are enthusiasts themselves and can help you out (I have seen plenty of shops that don't want to touch those, not because they aren't friendly, but because they just don't care about them and don't want to be bothered). Also if you are licensed ham, or interested, joining a local club might net you some folks who can help out.

I remember when the prices for the siren set up were sky high. Definitely tapered off, and the market seemed to flood with the units, but the desire isn't there for them like there was about 5+ years ago.

Look for listings with "make offer", particularly if they are selling a higher quantity. You might be able to score a deal if you write a fair offer and the guy turns around and looks at the pile of radios/sirens he is trying to offload that are collecting dust. Never hurts to ask.

Sorry for the late reply. That's what I've been looking into. I'd like to keep everything original as close as possible so I think I'll just have to pay what I think is reasonable. Now finding a shop somewhere is a whole new story. I live about 45 minutes north of Austin tx and I cant seem to find anyone anywhere that works on Motorola radios other than a few large companies that deal with fleet outfitters. If I could find a small shop that could help with programming, set up and purchase/repair of parts that would be amazing. They could verify what all I need and what specific cables etc
