Just getting back into the hobby after a few years hiatus. The last scanner I purchased was the Pro-97 maybe 10 years ago.
I just picked up the Uniden bcd436hp and am fairly disappointed. Not in the unit itself but the are that I live in Atlantic County. looks like most PD are encrypted except for Atlantic City and Brigantine. Those are at least the two that I can pull in with the RS800 antenna from Galloway.
I'm tempted to return the scanner and do something more useful with $450 but I really think it is a great scanner and I'm looking forward to taking it on trips and being able to easily start scanning in different locations.

Is there a chance that a firmware update down the road would be able to decode provoice systems or would that be beyond a firmware update and require a new scanner?

Anyone else in the area? What are you listening to?

I'm in Atlantic Co. as well. There is a lot of exciting stuff on the Atlantic City Phase 1 system that you can listen to as well as Fire, EMT and all of the casino operations.

As far as Galloway PD, EHT PD, Hamilton PD, EHC PD, they are all on Provoice which cannot be monitored with any scanner. Your only option would be to tap into the discriminator port of a scanner and feed the audio to a PC running DSD. Another option would be to get a PSR-800 (or the updated version-Whistler 1080) scanner which has a built-in discriminator output and feed that to a PC running DSD. The added benefit is that it has the ability to follow Provoice talkgroups.

Forgot to add, you can also listen to the NJSP and NJ Transit PD with the 436hp. I have the HomePatrol 2. I also use the RS800 antenna with it. Very nice antenna.

What radio do you feel is better for Nj, the HP2 or the 436HP? I am looking into purchasing the HP2, but I already have the 436HP, would this be a smart move?
