Audacity and 2 way recording

If this is not the right forum please move, but since it has to do with audio recording it seemed the best place to request info.

I am trying to use Audacity to record multiple channels of radio audio in our train yard for troubleshooting. Is there a way to make the recording stop and start with the reception of the audio. Otherwise it will be one hell of a big file to go through.

If you can't get the sound activate to work you can take the recorded file and truncate the silence. I take my 30 minute archive recordings and listen in 4-7 minutes (depending on what's happening).
