Want to hear what your great-grandfather might have with his crystal radio and cat-whisker detector?

On this page is an audio link and very interesting story involving a convoluted link from England back to the States which involves a 10-mile (!) long beverage:

https://www.maine.gov/newsletter/dec2003/radio_free_belfast_maine.htm

It just blows me away to hear that link. We take it for granted today, but back then, this was still very much experimental. And someone sending a long string of "V's" in morse. 1khz away - 10 or even 1mhz away? Who knows! Probably on the shortwave link.

I'm so glad they saved it.

I tried to model an 82,500 (10 mile) foot long wire 6 feet above ground. Think I need to upgrade past the demo version of EZnec to do that. :)

It would be fascinating to see what the directional and matching properties are. I suppose that explains the water-tank sized matching coil as seen in the article.
