hey guys i;m hoping someone can help me here, I have GRE PSR-500 I've had it for a few years, lately when i turn it on i get static from the speaker, i;m guessing the volume knob is dirty, but i also have static in the audio in all channels and frequencies. it happens with both the speaker and head phones.

any one know what is causing this, or how to fix it?

thanks

Typically, I have found if the culprit is simply a dirty volume knob there will still be positions on the knob that sound normal without extra static. If no matter where the volume knob is set there is always extra static, it could be a capacitor that is showing its age; they can create crackling, hissing, static type sounds when they go bad especially in audio circuits when they are exposed to DC current.

The capacitors I would suspect are soldered on the back side of the board beneath where the volume knob is mounted.

The first place to start would likely be to spray the volume knob however that is not an easy task as there is no hole to spray in the cleaner. I very carefully cut a small hole using an exacto knife to spray in cleaner once however I would not suggest it to the faint in heart as one small slip could ruin the volume knob.

Just my two cents for what it is worth.

Thanks for the reply, I figured the static when turning the unit on was from a dirty knob, the one I can't figure out is the static when RX , it happens on all frequencies and channels with both speaker and headphone.
