I have a new BCD436HP. I want to get an earbud for one ear that I can use to monitor my scanner. I don't want a headset. What does anyone recommend? I'd like something like the Secret Service wear but audio only. I bought one from HRO but it has the audio tube and does not work well (low volume). I'd like a speaker in the ear which I think would give more volume. I have searched but do not know which earbud is best.

Another question I have is that I would like to connect the radio earphone jack to my car audio via a 3.5mm plug. If I use a monaural cable I will get audio only on one side of my speakers? I have seen 3.5mm adapters that have a female stereo jack in one end and a monaural plug on the other end. If I use a 3.5mm stereo cable connected to the adapter I believe I will get both left and right cahannels on my car stereo. Is correct. Thanks, Bob.

Just type "Listen only earpiece" on amazon or whever you want. The acoustic tubes are fine if you get a decent one and attach it right. People use them all the time to hear their scanner over loud environmental noise. I had the BCD436 originally with that use in mine, I hide it under the jacket or in the inner front pocket on coats that have it so I can listen secretly to security in casinos and stores and they have no idea I can hear them. Also the recording and close call too for frequency discoveries and to capture interesting/funny transmission. I was listening to the police on Simplex tactical when they were doing surveillance in a neighborhood waiting for a guy to show up and I was hanging around hehe.

I use a normal pair of in ear buds and leave the second side under my shirt
Thanks Paul. I have looked at a lot of them. So the BCD will accept a stereo plug but only get audio on one channel. Bob.

Thanks. I guess my acoustic tube type should work. They do work but are not loud. I have a hearing loss and I was looking for more auduo output. I too want an earbud for the same reasons as you. Bob.

No. The same audio is sent to both sides. Plug in a stereo headset, and you hear the same audio in both ears. Don't use a mono plug; it shorts out one side of the output, and the amplifier doesn't like that.

OK thanks. That explains as the earbud I bought at HRO is low on audio and only has a mono plug. They knew I was going to use it on a BCD. I hope it has not caused any amplifier damage. I'll get some stereo earbuds. Bob.

I have used 2 scanners with stereo earbuds attached. I stick one bud from each scanner in each ear and listen to both scanners at the same time.

I don't believe it is likely you damaged the amplifier if used for short durations and moderate volume (not an endowment to continue). A reasonable test with stereo earbuds would be hearing the same sound lever in both ears as the volume control is moved from minimum to max. Never really easy to predict how the failure might manifest itself other than no audio at any volume control level. Not a strike against HRO, but many don't appreciate the specifics of the design.

If the speaker uses a stereo plug it should be good to go.

.....In my previous post it should be 'endorsement' not 'endowment'.

What about an Aux. speaker like you use on a cell phone ?
Thanks. I want an earbud for discrete listening.. I don't need a speaker. Bob.

Like i said, when done right they are plenty loud. Give a few different ones a try and see if you can get one that works for you.
