To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I'm having problems I think with the APCO card installed on my digital scanner. I tried setting the audio quality level so I can hear the radio system signal clearly without garble noises. It comes through ok but, there is still a lot of garble/distortion while listening. I keep trying to lower and raise the audio quality level to get the signal below 50 as indicted in Uniden's manuel without much luck. Audio quality indictor seems to vary continuously up and down, going from 40 to 160 when the system is active. Could someone please help me. I don't really want hear any garble while listening.

I have a BC-785D scanner with a digital decoder card installed and referring to a mixed mode VHF Motorola Smartzone Type II system.

Thanks.

There are other factors that go into how the digital quality is with these scanners. If you're listening to a distant system and have a marginal signal, no amount of tampering with the sound quality will clear it up. Make sure you have a good signal strength

APCO25 RX performance

Also keep in mind, it may not be your scanner at all.

A good stable RX signal level is important. You may need an external antenna or lower loss coaxial cable to help with the RX signal.

You need to determine if the dispatcher is requesting the mobile unit to re-transmit, as the repeater may no be receiving a good quality signal from the mobile unit.

I have a 785D, 296D and PRO-96 and I listen to the PRO-96 most of the time due to the better overall audio quality. The Unidens are not garbled, but muffled and distorted as compared to the PRO96.

Also try an external speaker to see if this helps. Some of the early 785D units had faulty internal speakers that were really muffled and distorted. When I got my 785D, I thought the IF stage was out of alignment and off frequency, until I determined that the speaker was faulty!
