Volume offset is it very valuable tool with the 100. After all those years of muffled garbled audio from Uniden I was pleased with the sds100. Sounds great to me. I would have to be the odd man out.

As Scotty said, aye captain, it's no tribble at all... for those of you who get the reference.

One thing that has not been mentioned here, the fact that many of us are "older gentlemen" and prone to some hearing loss in different frequency ranges. This, I believe, is why the anecdotal results are kind of subjective.

Totally agree, i hesitated to mention this for being afraid of offensive (though I'm paper thin shy to to say goodby to 5, but still has quite sharp young ear somehow -- at the cost of overly poor sense of smelling some how) . As we aging, we loose hi pitch sensitivity first. Can You Hear It? Sonic Devices Play High-Pitched Noises To Repel Teens

Now since many are jumping in, things make sense, but looks like everyone has a different problem. I started the _____ about the speaker, and itsa only on my analog trunking. Digital and conventional analog is fine. I see others have problems on other bands. Strange?

"guys like me would bury it"... Don't let me discourage you from filing a lawsuit on behalf of those who feel as strongly as you do on this matter.

My suspicion is you dropped or spilled something on the scanner, and now you're wondering why the speaker sounds bad. As I said you're talking out your back end, but for $500 for your "broken scanner", you can dump it off and someone will send it to Uniden for repairs.
Dear Sir,
you are quite certain that its my fault, Must say, the first day I had it it was tinny. I spoke to the dealer and was told a upgrade is on its way. Secondly, your accusation that I dropped it is also wrong, Again, refer to point 1. Thirdly, i never spilled anything in it. Fourthly, it is not broken, whereas many scanner enthusiasts complain about same (*please refer to internet i.e. SDS 100 poor audio). And finally, before making the statement I can blow it out my backside, check your facts. It is of poor quality.
This is my first (and last) rant I ever had on RR since I joined years ago, most were answered in civil, professional, helpful ways.
Have a good day sir.

Retain an attorney, file the paperwork and we'll wait for you to post the link from the attorney so we can all sign on. In other words, you're talking out your back end, and if you're not happy with a product, you have options.
Evidently, your sarcasm spoke before your intellect. As you know from your legal courses, I can only presume, you were absent for the semester on lawsuits as anyone knows, a class action must be presented with many signatures including each ones complaint. State by state laws differ on the numbers but most are 500+. So your statement for me to retain a law firm, would be a waste of time, unless many joined in prior to the presentation in court.
You are on different posts I see, with the same verbatum of references to my back end. Maybe you could attend a couple courses to make up for your missed ones on lawsuits 202. Harvard and Yale both offer.
Respectfully,

My SDS100's sound good for the size of speaker it is. Plenty loud enough for my office, bedroom and in vehicle with windows up. If you're driving with windows down, then you might want to run it through your vehicle audio system or buy an amplified speaker.

Thanks, but i got a HP2 built in the car. my sds100 was for indoors to scan a bunch of channels since my 8000s are limited to 32 per scan. I don't find the volume low, its tinny. Compared to my 436, (4 years old) side by side the 436 is crisp, not tinny.
again, thanks

This probably did not happen to you, but in my case early on I had an issue (operator error) that caused me a bit of grief. My finger slipped one time when I was adjusting the modulation type and the received frequency sounded like crap. It took me an hour to figure it out due my then unfamiliarity with the scanner.

Yes. I’ve noticed the ”thin” “tinny” audio on the analog side. Nothing is perfect. I’ve posted many questions about the SDS 100 and have received some great answers and assistance here. Yes, I’m still learning! Like many I’ve invested many hours (along with the $$ investment) into this radio. I’ll have to say that it’s slowly “growing” (like moss) on me! 😉

Im hopeful. Maybe some day after the umpteenth read of the Mark’s Scanners guide or on the 150th viewing of a video I’ll figure out the quick keys? Smart keys? Whatever they may be! But then again, are they even necessary?

Final comments. I noticed that it “receives” better on an external antenna! Also, on a recent trip to the Metro NYC it performed admirably! Maybe it’s my location (RF environment) coupled with operator errors and misfires?

HA! I can so relate, this ain't your grandpa's scanner, it takes time to learn, and with learning, you have to play with it and try things out.

Yep, no matter how good a radio is, without a decent antenna you cannot expect much. I plan on putting up a decent outside antenna this summer because I have some inside QRM issues and also because I live way out in tulies. To get me through to then I bought a Comet W100RX for home and a Remtronix 842S for portable use.

On the subject of the external antenna, I'm going to have investigate which one to go with.

It's important to assign a quick key to a favorites list. That way you can toggle favorites list on and off as you move about. I use system quick keys also but not so much Department quick keys.

For example, let's say I have favorites list number 2 for my County and I call it BUCKS. I can toggle that favorites list on and off by pushing 2 enter, other counties have other quick key numbers assigned to them and I can toggle them on and off also. You always have to have one favorites list active or you will get the nothing to scan message.

I live along the River and listen to marine radio everyday but let's say I'm going up County which is further away from the river and out of range of marine broadcast. I have a system number for marine frequencies, it's number 1... so if I toggle 2.1 enter I'm listening to my County but I've eliminated the marine frequencies temporarily so I don't have to listen to the static and poor reception. When I come back south to where the River is I toggle 2.1 enter back on and now I'm listening to marine frequencies again in addition to my County.

This is off topic but you will slowly get more and more familiar with the radio and it will work a lot better and serve you better.

I've complained on soooooo many posts about this. WE can get it fixed or a rebate for poor quality!!
Other Uniden portables don't have this problem, so it is a defect.
Lets let them design a new speaker, and start a recall
OR YES, a class action lawsuit??

I have been listening to very loud music since I first saw Steppenwolf in 1969. I believe Motorhead flattened the hair cells within my ear. If you have such a history, a hearing assessment might be in order.

I will add another point. If you would like to hear choppy simulcast transmissions, depending on your listening environment, with better audio quality, I certainly recommend the 436HP. However, there is a very easy fix for your SDS 100. I own two TaoTronics BT transmitters which turns this little beast into a very loud-sounding radio. I am pretty sure you could also increase the power of this BT with another. I have seen some incredibly wonderful BT Sony Speakers as well.

Yes, there is a distinct possibility you have an dysfunctional unit. If you know someone with a SDS 100, do a side-by-side comparison. You explanation sounds like it is rather fkuced up.
