Audio with zello

Hello all, forgive me if this is not the right place to post this. I am having trouble with audio on a Zello setup that I have. I am running a Yaesu Ft-7800 connected to a R1-2023 usb box and that is connected to my desktop computer. I have been testing this setup on a 2-meter simplex frequency before I change it to our local repeater. When talking on a HT the audio is transmitted perfect thru the radio and the Zello app. The problem I am having is, when talking thru the Zello app there is no consistently with the quality of the audio. I have been tinkering with settings for 2 days now and not having any success. Has anyone out there had any similar setup's like this and can help.

I encountered something similar when building an ROIP gateway for our conventional P25 system. The culprit was automatic gain control on the gateway donor radio; it caused fluctuating levels and sounded fuzzy or distant. Switching the donor radio to fixed mic gain solved the issue. If I were you I'd look into disabling any audio post-processing or AGC if present.
