From KUSA:

AURORA – One woman was airlifted to the hospital and another was injured in a two-part crash that forced crews to shut down Interstate 70 in both directions for several hours on Friday night.

The Colorado State Patrol says the original accident involved two vehicles in traffic in the westbound lanes of I-70 near E-470 just after 7 p.m.

Both the drivers were women and one got out of her vehicle, according to troopers.

A driver of a semi truck saw her and swerved to miss her. That semi kept going, according to State Patrol.

Another semi was following the first and as a precaution, swerved when the semi in front of it swerved. State Patrol says when the second semi swerved, the truck hit both of the other cars, then hit the concrete divider and rolled onto its side.

At some point, the woman who had gotten out of her car was also hit, but troopers say she was not hit by the second semi truck. They say it is possible she was hit by the first semi truck and they are investigating if it was a hit-and-run.

Fuel spilled out of the semi when it crashed, but HazMat crews were able to contain it.

The woman who had gotten out of her car was airlifted to a hospital with critical injuries, according to the State Patrol.

The driver of the other car involved in the initial crash and then hit by the semi was also taken to a local hospital with moderate injuries. Troopers say they had to extricate that driver and a passenger from that car. Troopers say the passenger was not taken to the hospital.

The driver and the passenger of the semi were not injured.

Crews closed the highway between Tower Road and E-470. It was unclear when the highway would reopen.

DATE: 3-8-08
TIME: 6:40 A.M.
LOCATION: Westbound I-70 at E-470.
On 3-7-08 at approximately 7:05 P.M. Troopers responded to the westbound
lanes of I-70 just east of E-470.
A silver 2003 Pontiac Sunfire was facing southeast in the right lane of
westbound I-70 from a previous crash with a gold 2004 Chevrolet Trail
Blazer. The Trail Blazer was disabled in the westbound lanes of I-70
facing in a southerly manner with its rear in the left lane and its front
against the center median barrier from the previous crash with the Pontiac
Sunfire. The female driver of the Trail Blazer exited her vehicle and was
standing between the open drivers door and the vehicle. A. red 2005
Freightliner Conventional truck-tractor was traveling westbound on I-70. A
non- contact semi and trailer also traveling westbound on I-70 moved from
the right lane to the left lane to travel around the silver Pontiac. The
red Freightliner moved from the right lane to the left lane due to the
non-contact semi's movement and struck the left rear of the Trailblazer
with its left side, causing the Trail Blazer to rotate counter-clockwise
striking the female driver who was standing between the door and the Trail
Blazer. The female driver was thrown into the road and was struck by the
Freightliner. The Freightliner traveled partially onto the concrete median
barrier and rolled 1/4 time onto its right side. The Pontiac remained at
rest where it had been and the Trail Blazer came to rest on its wheels in
the left lane facing northwest. The Freightliner came to rest on its right
side facing in a westerly manner.

The restrained female driver of the Pontiac Sunfire has been identified as
Malinda L. Casey, 19 of Bennett, CO. Casey sustained minor injuries and was
transported by ambulance to University Hospital.
The pedestrian and also the female driver of the Chevrolet Trail Blazer has
been identified as Yelena A. Lyubimskaya, 44 of Aurora, CO. Lyubimskaya
sustained critical injuries and was airlifted from the scene and
transported to Denver Health. Lyubimskaya was later pronounced dead by an
attending physician at Denver Health.
The restrained female driver of the Freightliner has been identified as
Roberta L. Strokel, 57 of Tukwila, WA. Strokel did not sustain any injuries
and was not transported.
The unrestrained male passenger within the Freightliner has been identified
as Gaylen E. Strokel, 60 of Tukwila, WA. Strokel did not sustain any
injuries and was not transported.

Alcohol, drugs and speed are not suspected as contributing factors.
Next of kin have been notified.
