AURORA | An Aurora Fire Department pumper truck caused damage Tuesday, April 8, to both hospital landscaping and the rear end of a parked car after it rolled unmanned down a driveway and into a parking lot at the Medical Center of Aurora.
Hospital officials say one fireman was injured as he apparently ran after the truck and tried to stop it.
"Mostly road rash, but no broken bones," said Aurora Fire Department spokesman Capt. Mark Turley.
Hospital officials said the truck, which was at the hospital following up on another accident, was stopped near the emergency exit without its parking brake set when it rolled down a slight hill around 12:45 p.m.
The truck rolled backward approximately 150 yards into the hospital parking lot, where it passed up and over a landscaped median before careening into a Volkswagen and high-centering itself on a second median.
Aurora Police spokesman Sgt. James Blanton said a traffic officer did take a report, but no summons was issued at the scene. Blanton said it is department policy to internally review incidents like this.
Blanton said the fireman received minor injuries to his leg, but he did not have any further details on his condition. Turley said the man was released later that day.
"It's currently an ongoing investigation," Turley said.
The fireman was driven back up the slight hill in an ambulance and treated at the hospital. Hospital officials say the several-hundred foot ambulance ride was needed for patient safety and so that caregivers didn't have to push a stretcher up the hill.
Officials from Rural Metro Ambulance, which provides ambulance service for TMCA, said the ride up the hill could cost at least a $400.
