AURORA | An Aurora Fire Department pumper truck caused damage Tuesday, April 8, to both hospital landscaping and the rear end of a parked car after it rolled unmanned down a driveway and into a parking lot at the Medical Center of Aurora.

Hospital officials say one fireman was injured as he apparently ran after the truck and tried to stop it.

"Mostly road rash, but no broken bones," said Aurora Fire Department spokesman Capt. Mark Turley.

Hospital officials said the truck, which was at the hospital following up on another accident, was stopped near the emergency exit without its parking brake set when it rolled down a slight hill around 12:45 p.m.

The truck rolled backward approximately 150 yards into the hospital parking lot, where it passed up and over a landscaped median before careening into a Volkswagen and high-centering itself on a second median.

Aurora Police spokesman Sgt. James Blanton said a traffic officer did take a report, but no summons was issued at the scene. Blanton said it is department policy to internally review incidents like this.

Blanton said the fireman received minor injuries to his leg, but he did not have any further details on his condition. Turley said the man was released later that day.

"It's currently an ongoing investigation," Turley said.

The fireman was driven back up the slight hill in an ambulance and treated at the hospital. Hospital officials say the several-hundred foot ambulance ride was needed for patient safety and so that caregivers didn't have to push a stretcher up the hill.

Officials from Rural Metro Ambulance, which provides ambulance service for TMCA, said the ride up the hill could cost at least a $400.

No excuse but that's a very poorly designed ER ambulance entrance with a hill going up to the doors and a hill and turn coming down.

I would have to say that South's ER ambulance entrance is much better designed than AIP's where you have to back the ambulance up to the ER doors. Not to mention, that space can only hold two ambulances.

At least with Aurora South it has a HUGE hill and turn to park the overflow with easy access to the ER. Defiantly not designed to accommodate a fire engine though

If you don't like University, which is great by the way check out Rose sometime, ambulances were certainly an after thought there luckily there stocked EMS lounge makes up for it.

Charles relax all the ambulances and fire engines we are referring to have radios in there cabs!

Haha, thats a good point about Rose. They do have an awesome lounge. Parker's isn't too bad either. That IS most certainly one thing that AIP lacks though.

Yea, now that you mention Rose, I guess the whole backing up thing at AIP isn't too bad :)
