AURORA - A grandfather was rescued from his burning home Friday after his grandson walked out safely.

Aurora firefighters were called to the home on the 900 block of Uvalda near I-225 and 6th Ave. around 2:30 a.m.

When fire crews arrived at the home the grandson was waiting on the front lawn. He told them his grandfather was inside, fire officials said.

Neighbors with fire extinguishers tried to enter the home to rescue the man, but could not because of heat and heavy smoke, Aurora Fire officials said.

Rescuers found the man and pulled him to safety through his bedroom window.

Both the man and his grandson were hospitalized. The grandfather was suffering from smoke inhalation, but both are expected to be okay, according to Aurora Police. A neighbor who was trying to help in the rescue was also hospitalized after cutting her ankle on broken glass.

Damage to the home and its contents is estimated to be around $100,000.
