Not really sure. I have not been told anything cast in stone. My best guess, a new Harris P25 Phase II simulcast with Aurora . My assumption encryption would be in the cards. So is the a slight chance they may be coming to a point to make a new system or go to starcomm? I they do I believe there will be full encryption if they do.
APD units were mostly using their own system on an operations channel (I heard them mention a number, but I don't remember if it was 1 or 2) which was being patched to SC21. There are 2 zones of secure tactical talkgroups in the IIFOG but my guess would be a lot of radios in the field don't have them programmed in: the secure zones are optional and still pretty new while the ITTF region TGs are in virtually every SC21 radio statewide. Throwing another wrench in the plan is the fact only 3 of the secure talkgroups are allowed in dispatch consoles, so if you want to have a dispatch center on with you too bad, you'll have to go through IC. I'm sure IEMA has their reasons for this but it handcuffs departments. I would expect in the future more of these types of events moving from the ITTF Region groups to the secure ones.OpenSky will cripple itself in a few years. During the riots most APD was using ITTF Region 3 Talkgroups which are not encrypted. The tactical channels should be encrypted so stuff like that don't happen again. But there is no reason they were using the dispatch channels for the riots.
APD uses OPS1 . Should have been more clear. Some other departments' radios may have their AES enabled to work with outside agencies. MY radios do not have AES enabled. It is there, in our newer Harris portables , we just do not use it. No need on a system that can not be monitored.Open sky is 10 years old now in Naperland.. I was given the original Powerpoint presentation and training materials when it went live from NFD to help train Mutual aid users. There is Encryption available and is an option on the radios
I believe they talk to NFD via NFD's patch with DuCom . ( WESCOM Fire SC21 radio talks to patch with NFD, that is located at DuCom) WESCOM and DuCom both have OPEN SKY radios at their respective dispatch centers. So what is the Naperville FD talk group patch to Wescom
So most likely there is a PSAP to PSAP channel on the OpenSky System since WESCOM and DuComm have OpenSky radios.I believe they talk to NFD via NFD's patch with DuCom . Does this only run off of the Will/Grundy County Simulcast Sites? I was listening to DuPage and Will/Grundy trying to get TG 2726 the other day when I was over in the area. Had no luck. They also have patch with WESCOM. I listen to Fire everyday in my squad . They use station alerting via Purvus , that computer voice gets old ..... I have noticed DuCom interops channel come up when Naperville is talking with Lisle/Woodridge or Warrenville. Not being monitorable was part of the reason for Open Sky being selected. Some day ? look for a L3Harris Phase II P25 system for Aurora/Naperville. I know that Harris is tired of supporting the Public Safety Open Sky systems they have deployed.
