Austin area scanner club get together??

Hey everyone, this Mike aka Mikepro96fan. I think it would be awesome to have a monthly social with all the scanner buffs here in Austin and surrounding counties. Share informaton, stories, show scanners! Get to know one another instead of sitting behind a computer. I am always interested in meeting other folks who have the same hobby as myself, aren't you?? Hopefully enough people will respond to make this worthwhile. Do monitor Austin/Travis County Public Safety or any other systems? I do with the Pro96.

So far have just been monitoring aviation frequencies.... can't find much otherwise, though haven't spent much time looking otherwise. I've seen that most of Austin is gone digital.

Picked up a Uniden BC246T at Fry's the other day, seems to work pretty well. Have been experimenting with some different antennas, one on my roof, one on the car and a rubber duck...

Does anyone else monitor Austin/Travis County P25 system? I am still trying to see if anyone wants to start a scanner club in Austin. I listen to aircraft on ocassion. I especially like to listen to under cover APD known as Street Response units, CIB talkgroups known as Criminal Investigation Branch, Travis County (west side) Adam, West Tac, and Swat talkgroups as well. I live on the west side. What side of Austin do you live in? I live off of 2222 and I am in line of sight with Simulcast 1 tower and get 99% signal strength on my Pro96. What else do you listen to? You should get a Pro96,very easy to operate!

Sorry, should have gotten back sooner... I live NW, close to Spicewood Springs and 183. I stuck a Rat Shack VHF antenna on my roof, and can pick up lots of airplane conversations, but this far out I can't get the tower/ATC side of things. I've been known to drive down to the airport and sit in the car and listen for an hour or so though..

I'd be interested to know what else I can pick up in Austin, but since most units have gone digital, the little bit of searching I've done has not picked up much interesting. What frequencies are you listening to? I need to be spoonfed the programming..

Thanks for all the replies. If anyone else is interested please let me know a good time/place to have an Austin scanner club meeting. The "Ham radio operaters" have a club; so why can't Austin area scanner buffs have a club?? I use Pro96

Good luck on getting something together. Past attempts in the last couple years (in Austin) at this have been a bust. What's good for one person (meet time/place) isn't good for many others and vice versa. You might also want to announce something on the centexcom group too (yahoo). I have also tried this same thing in the Houston area on the houstonscan group (700 or so members). While a lot of people said it sounded good and would attend, when it came down to it only 1 person showed up one time and only 3-4 the next.

Work Schedule and Location seem to be the main factors.

Perhaps a Sunday at a location central to all... Say once a month? (used to work for the Ch15/33 CB bunch.)
(Tough call as we are widely spaced. Suggest Central North or Central South Austin. Several dining facilities welcome regular groups. Ch 15/33 used to meet at Holiday House on Exposition- but it's been sold. Austin Ham group used to meet at holiday House at Airport and 53'rd, but it's sold...
Jeez, sold Holiday House seems to have become a theme in RF and I didn't realize it til I thought back and typed this...)

Let's look for a space who welcomes regular customers.

I think Central-To-All-Concerned is critical. This was probably the problem with the Houston group as you are talking about 5M-folks here. (5,000,000 folks in area ,so I coined 5M phrase...) How can anywhre be Central to 5M folks??

This post probably is "rambling" but makes sense if you are from Texas and read it a few times.

I'm still in favor of getting together. I can meet any time and anywhere exept on Sundays when NASCAR season starts up again in Feb.

It would be nice if we could meet at time when the man I mentioned above that goes by the name of "RADAR" could meet with us. He is a dispatcher for WILLIAMSON COUNTY S.O. He is loaded with frequency info about all the cities in Williamson County. If I remember correctly, he knows all about the Austin area too.

What about meeting at a place, or at an event, that would naturally attract scanner users anyway? That might make it easier for more folks to attend.

Thanks for all the replies. Perhaps we could all meet on a Saturday evening? Monthly scanner meeting would consist of showing of scanners, cloning scanners, sharing data, get new scanner buffs started in the right direction, meet like minded individuals! Please let me know if there are other suggestions.
