Iam planning a trip to Australia I would like to take my scanner and my ham gear and my metal detector with me

DO I need a permint for the scanner and the ham gear? or will my FCC licenses be enough?
Thanks Midnightcaller

Hi Midnightcaller,

In Australia we are lucky enough not to have any requirements for permits with regards to scanners here.
With regards to transmitting gear, please see http://www.wia.org.au/discover/visitorinfo/about/

I'm sure the sound of a visitor opening up some of our repeaters here is sure to get you a response!

The only problem you may have is our border security people asking you what the "radios" are for- but bring that license with you and you should be fine. We are not that paranoid here (yet!)

Enjoy your stay- and be warned- compared to the U.S. winter- it's bloody hot here in summer so pack your short sleeves! (We are expecting 95-100 deg F/ 35-40 deg C on Monday here in Melbourne)

Regards, Commscanaus.

Probably the biggest issue you will have in Australia is that when you step off a kerb you will look the wrong way and almost get skittled. That was the number 1 issue for me in the US.
