someone from Austria would have to answer the question for there, but it is always good to have some proof of purchase on electroncs to show you didn't buy them overseas when you come back thru US Customs.

i figure the big FCC stamp on the back could prove that.

Since you'll have plenty of waiting time at the airport, just find the customs office at your terminal. They will issue a document showing that the item(s) were taken outside of the US.

I was in Sweden on a cruise ship and people with FRS radios were complaining about interference. Turned out that some of the channels were assigned to mobile phones there.

My guess would be not to take them into the country. Some zealous cops might see you using them and you can guess the rest. I've taken ham radio to many countries along with copies of my license and the CEPT agreement showing it is legal in member countries. It just so happened that the ham radio has 200 channels and scans...

P.S. the radio stayed in my room while in Russia.

Hi Zang and all,

The US is in ITU Region 2 while Austria is in Region 1 which has entirely different frequency assignments. The only ones that come close are Amateur Radio and the band plans differ slightly. That'll make your transmitting equipment illegal except for Amateur with a CEPT license.

In many countries scanners are illegal so unless you have positive information IN WRITING from the governing body in question saying it's OK you'd best leave all of it at home unless you're prepared for an extended visit and not a lot of help from the State Department. The litterbug kid visiting Taiwan still got caned and his American supporters politely told to buzz off.

"P.S. the radio stayed in my room while in Russia."

The same could be said about Moscow NY considering the laws are quite similar. (;->)

As a general rule it is perfectly legal to purchase/own/import a scanner in Europe.

However, since 99% of what your scanner can recieve is illegal to listen to, anyone carrying one tends to be treated with suspicion, especially with today's terrorist threat.

If you bring one ensure that all frequencies are erased on arrival & departure - program it your hotel room and listen to it only there (assuming you can understand Austrian anyhow !)

See how a little sentence restructuring makes it perfectly clear? ROTFLOL!

"Leave the scanner at home . Monitoring is verboten."

Ja verboten, nicht eintritt mit der scanner.

Manytimes it's also the Cruise Ship frequencies, sharing GMRS channels.

Two things:

1) The kid who got caned for littering was in Singapore, not Taiwan.

2) Austria is in Europe. You might have better results asking in that Forum.
