I've always wondered why Uniden (and other scanner manufacturers) haven't added a way to specify just the system ID and band, instead of defining all of the sites in a trunked Smartnet or Astro 25 system.
The radio could automatically seek out and find the control channel, then learn its neighbors via the control channel data, perhaps periodically measuring their signal strengths and changing control channels when necessary. This would make programming large statewide systems (such as Minnesota's 300+ site ARMER system) much simpler.
I'm assuming that it's a patent issue. Perhaps something like this:
